Graham,
Thanks for posting when you saw the inlet manifolds.

I bought them and they’ve just arrived and look good.

Dear Fastpace,

Thank you for posting the photos of AEX1010.

Just to try and answer you questions:
1. The overall condition of the car looks good and it doesn’t look as though there’s any serious damage to be concerned about.  Clearly there’s some rust on the chassis tubes but it doesn’t look serious. From my experience the main chassis tubes can sag in the middle and this causes the bodywork around the doors to crack but t doesn’t look like you have that problem. Indeed the bodywork looks in pretty good shape.
2. As regards the foot boxes: I am pretty sure they would have had to be altered to get the new heavier-duty and wider transmission installed. The fact that the battery has already been moved to the boot/trunk is a plus in my opinion because it makes space to extend the foot box and move the pedals back a few inches. People are a lot taller than in the 1950’s and the foot box on an Ace is quite short.
3. Engine mounts. Photo 27 looks as though it might be a Weller engine mount but then I presume some adapter plate has been made in order to fit the Chevy small block. If it is a Weller engine mount you may see the chassis number 1010 stamped on the top face.

Kind regards,
Ben

Dear Fastpace,

As regards reference books for the Ace and the Cobra you should definitely try and get hold of a copy of Rinsey Mills’ book “ Original Ace & Cobra: the Restorers Guide” .I found it invaluable when restoring AEX146.

When, and if, you come to replacing the small block with an AC engine I’d be happy to pass on the lessons I learnt. It’s certainly doable but you do need a high pain threshold!

Kind regards,
Ben Morgan

I would like both items for AEX146.

Dear Bobbie,
The AC Factory Records have the details of the original colours for your car. There are a couple of ways to get the information. 1. via the Aceca Register which is posted on this website but I think you have to be an ACOC member to access it; and 2. The records are in Rinsey Mills’  book “ AC Six-cylinder Sports Cars in Detail” .

Alternatively if you post the chassis number of the car I can look up the details for you.

Regards,
Ben Morgan

Olan,
As a starting point for your restoration you should get hold of a copy of Rinsey Mills book “Original AC Ace & Cobra” (Published by Bay View Books ISBN 1 870979 14 1). The book has lots of useful information and photos.

Good luck with the project.

Ben

Mike Isles wrote a short article about re-tempering the springs of his Ace in ACtion (June 2020). He had good service from Owen Springs ( www.owensprings.co.uk)

Response to 30th Jan post by DHAceca:

Dear David,
I can provide a bit more information about the registration number and original engine of your car AE526.

My e mail address is Benedict.morgan@yahoo.co.uk

Like others on the Forum I think that your customer should try and save the AC engine. This is not only the value maximising strategy but will be the most rewarding thing to do, particularly if if he/ she gets involved in the process.

Also I was surprised by your comment “....may well find that after countless hours and expense that the engine cannot be saved”. I think that with good preparation this risk can be minimised and I would recommend that, at least as a first call,  you make contact with Rod Briggs (www.ac-6.co.uk) who can provide estimates for the supply all the parts and undertake a water jacket replacement if that is needed.

Good luck with this project.

James,
Are you planning to have the roll bar permanently in position? I have a removable roll bar on AEX146. It doesn’t fit under the hood but my intention is to use it only for things like the Sprint. If it’s helpful I can send you a couple of photos and a description of how it’s fitted.

The restoration of AEX146 is almost complete and I am having a new hood made. I have “Original AC Ace & Cobra” by Rinsey Mills as a reference but I would be grateful if an owner of a flat screen/ long boot Ace could post or e mail me photographs of their car with the weather gear up. The trimmer is particularly interested to see the profile of the hood and the size and shape of the rear screen.

Many thanks in advance.

In restoring AEX146 I had 3 flat screens with embedded electric elements made up. I have one for sale if you’d like to upgrade from Keith’s back of the glove system!

The restoration of my Ace AEX146 is almost complete. Can anyone tell me whether the 5” speedometer and rev counter should have flat or domed glass covers? Thanks in advance.

Dear Ron,
I was absolutely delighted to see your post last week.I am the curent owner of AEX146 which is being restored in the UK with an AC engine. The project is quite well advanced but not so much so that we wouldnt benefit from seeing any further photographs of the car you may have. In addition, I would be very interested to learn more about the car's history.
If you'd like to send me an e mail my address is Benedict.morgan@yahoo.co.uk
   Kind regards,
   Ben
