3000ME Forum / Re: 3000me wishbone bushes
« on: January 07, 2018, 12:35:07 »
Hello Mark & Gerry,
Interested to know how the 3000ME performs with poly bushes, as the engineering appears to be somewhat different. On the originals, there is a metal sleeve around the bush, and both the inner and outer sleeves are bonded to the rubber. The polybush has no outer bush, and no bonding. This could result in more radial give, and much less longitudinal constraint, than with the original bush. This could affect wheel alignment.

On the 3000ME the car's handling is heavily influenced by rear wheel alignment. Have you noticed any changes?

Best wishes for 2018

John

I have been in contact with John Spenser,(archivist) ...

An ongoing e-mail dialogue with 'lighthouse' has established that the Invacar belongs to his neighbour, was made by Thundersley not AC, and has a twin-cylinder Steyr Puch engine.

The Thundersley was probably made to a similar design as the AC. The nearest equivalent AC is thought to be the Acedes Mk 70. There is no handbook or other information for this in the Archive, but I am trying to source and copy a handbook. This was e-mailed to 'lighthouse' yesterday.

Handbooks for the earlier AC invalid carriages include only basic information about the operation and running maintenance. As advised by 'BE774' & 'ted' above, the contact at invacar@yahoo.co.uk would most probably be a more fruitful source.

ACOC News and Events / NEC stand.
« on: November 14, 2017, 01:16:53 »
Spent a very interesting day at the NEC on Sunday. Of the 5 Halls, Hall 1 was by far the highest standard of presentation.  The ACOC stand therein, with four superb cars, some good quality artwork, decent floor covering, and a friendly welcome, was up there with the best.

It takes a huge amount of work, and considerable personal commitment in time and cost, to prepare and present a show stand. Huge thanks to Jeremy and Tony Witt for once again taking the lead and, with the car owners Bob Langley, John Norris,  Peter de Rousset Hall and Andy Shepherd, for representing the Club in excellent style.

Looking to the future, may I suggest 2019 will be a key year. Then, we will celebrate the ACOC's 70th Anniversary, the 120th Anniversary of the creation of Weller Bros, the 110th Anniversary of the Sociable - the first  passenger machine to bear the A-C name - and the 60th Anniversary of the Greyhound.

   Any volunteers?

There are rumours that it was bodied in alloy, rather than the steel for all subsequent production cars, though this is unsubstantiated

From memory, CF1 was indeed panelled in aluminium alloy. The engine was also slightly smaller than the production models (a relative term!!). Again from memory, 6996cc v the production 7014cc. Hence the original model designation 'AC 427 .....' when announced at the 1965 London Motor Show, where the car looked absolutely stunning.

Great detective work Kelly. It is brilliant to know the car is still around.

The copy of the Factory Ledger held in the ACOC Archive covers the entire production of 4-wheeled cars in the Hurlock era, that is circa 1930 to 1985.

All of the entries are pretty sparse, in general recording only the information described by RS. The exceptions are few, for example the original registration mark and engine state of tune is recorded for most PVT cars, and 3000ME key numbers are included! There is also a section which records cars that appear to have been run or loaned by AC Cars before being sold.

Under the Hurlocks' management, AC Cars policy was always to accommodate owners' wishes as far as possible - creating bespoke cars to a degree. Whilst period sales catalogues give some clues to options available on new cars they do not give the sort of detail being sought by JE, and nor was that recorded in the Ledger.

The records of any such work may be with the car, and some information may be with the Registrar. However, few owners in period envisaged their cars becoming treasured in the way we now regard them. Gathering the information often becomes a long-term project in itself, but ultimately very rewarding - gathering the history of BEX 333 is a great example!

Hi,
looking for advice on obtaining wishbone bushings

I called on the Rally Design stand at the NEC recently. They claimed to have poly bushes for the 3000ME. Try andy@rallydesign telephone 01227 792792.

Have fully dimensioned wishbone drawings. If you need copies please e-mail me.

AC Owners Club – Annual Clubman’s Sprint at Goodwood

In recent years we’ve had a slow but steady decline in AC-car entries .....

Adding to these pressures, at the time of writing this [in late 2016] Goodwood have decided that they are no longer able to sustain the 50% discount that we’ve enjoyed to date .....

Historically, the Sprint can be traced back to the ACOC's formation in 1949, its membership of 750MC and then the Combined One Make Car Club (COMCC) - ACOC being a founder member of the latter. Earlier venues have included Lidden Hill and Brands Hatch.

In terms of participants in the sprint and in racing, there is a long history of marginal support from ACOC members. At one time the Council was moved to detail member John Day (of PAR 419 fame) to r(h)ustle up some competitors, lest the Club had to resign its membership of COMCC!

Conversely, there has always been good support from the wider Car Club community for the Sprint. This is in no small way due to the relaxed and friendly style in which the Sprint is run. This has consistently resulted in a good day out for hundreds of people, whether participants, volunteers or spectators.

Equally importantly, in my personal view, through the links with other clubs the Sprint has maintained the ACOC's standing in the wider 'Classic Car' scene, and our Club has many long-standing friends as a result.

The increase in circuit fees is a concern. Whether or not this is recoverable through increased entry charges, or the ACOC is prepared to cover a loss, is a matter for the Council.  If ACOC decided to let Goodwood go, it would probably be irrecoverable, and be a very sad day.

My personal view is that there is a strong case for ACOC to continue with the Sprint at Goodwood.

Hi
I have been cleaning out the garage in an old 1920s house that belonged to an old family friend that I bought 2 years ago. In doing so I have found parts, pictures and engine blue prints belonging to this car. I beleave it was used for rallying origenly and was interested to see if this car is still on the road.

Thank you for contacting the ACOC. DPD 40 is in fine fettle having been in the ownership of a Club member for many years.
I will pass this information to the owner and suggest he contacts you. This may take a few days
   With regards

1919 LC&C and Cloverleaf model is on the list to investigate at my next visit to the British Library. They claim to have a copy of every British magazine ever published - and so far have not failed!

Regret Burnard's papers are not in the ACOC Archive

No doubt working through the 'Electric' structure, there were subsidies and tax efficiencies to be gained in the accounting.

To my knowledge, AC (Electric) had no connection whatsoever with AC Cars or its successor companies, but has nevertheless caused us a load of trouble!

A thorny old problem! I faced this about 20 years ago and DVLA did not then recognise AC Cars!
Unfortunately, some years ago there was a company called AC (Electric), and a small number of the Invalid carriages were electrically powered.
If all else fails Bertie is the Club's official contact with DVLA.
As a last resort I have access to copies of some original company records back to 1899! Please contact me if you need help with that.
