Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Racing History BEX333 (1957-1964)

I don't know how long it's been the regulation (I've lived in the state 15 years), but currently Washington state requires plates to be replaced every 7 years.

Unless you pay a fee to keep the existing registration number, a new number will be issued.

I believe that the post "T.D." era cars will always sell at a discount with how much depending on condition, mods, economy.

I've followed A.C.'s since the early 1960s and purchased an Ace 2.6 in the early 1970's for $2,000 (now find one for less than $300,000).

A good example was the newly rebuilt highly modified Aceca selling for $60,000 while a restored Aceca Bristol went unsold with a $140,000 bid.

Recently I drive newer Corvettes and follow their values. A restored '69 L88 427 will bring somewhere in the $200,000 range. A restored well storied race version just sold for $2.9m! Similarly mid 60's 427's were nearing $200,000 but a 1 of 1  (options plus red/red color) sold for $850,000. The fact that it was the only red exterior/red interior car built added $500,000!

In my mind the market for normal cars is off right now but rare or storied cars seem to be going for a premium. A great example is the Ferrari 330 GTS which sold in Scottsdale this month. It was driven 30,000 miles had a fire and went to the insurance company before being lost for 40 years. Un-repaired and not running it sold for $2.1m. The story probably added $1.25m.. to the price!

Rarety, provinance and stories bring the money.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / 1958 Sebring ? / Neat Old Photo

Here is a photo of the Ace at Bonneville as referenced in the letter from AK. It is from a 10 page or so article in Rodder's Journal (issue #32). THe article mostly deals with his hot rodding and Pan America road race escapades with his hot rod sports car "El Caballo".

I did see (on the Cobra forum?) a comment from a former neighbor kid who recalled seeing 2 Ace's in AK's garage one being the Ace which received the V8 treatment. He also recalled Carol Shelby visiting on various occasions and AK giving Shelby rides in the Ace around the neighborhood. The sight and noise of the car were quite impressive to the neighborhood kids!

Keith, I thought somewhere I'd seen a photo of an Ace with a very ugly cone attached to the grill.

This is the Ford powered Ace at Bonneville.

I read somewhere that AK at one point switched to Ford power from Chevy because his employer Ford took a dim view of his racing with their competitor's engines.

I wonder if the Devin featured in #6 here is the car? It has a 427 Ford engine. The seats look like AC items.

I can find several photos in period but nothing describing the car.

AK Miller was quite well know in US racing/hot rod circles.

Best wishes for the holidays Keith.

Great info, maybe this could be passed on to Martin for the Racing Sports Cars site. He has a record for the car but no ID information.

Try here. They're in North Carolina and indicate they have parts for both original and replicas:

Trying to cross reference the RSC web site with Tam McPartland's site, it appears that Peter Haywood was quite active on the west coast in the late 1950's to early 1960's (primarily California but also one race in Las Vegas).

The RSC page shows 3 Bristols, Haywood, Skip Horney and Al Norman at Santa Barbara in 1960.

Comparing these two pages, I suspect that A.C. #206 from Tam's page is in reality the #6 listed on the RSC page.

Tam's photo pages for the 1950's show several photos of A.C.'s at Riverside as early as the opening in 1957 and Paramont (in the hills near Malibu).

Finally here's a photo showing Lew Spencer in the Pellegrini A.C. at Santa Barbara in 1960.

You've probably seen it but Fantasy Junction has what appears to be a very nice AC engined Aceca (AE650).

Jay, I haven't been in touch with Walt for quite a while and just returned from a week+ road trip to Southern CA.

While there I toured the Riverside Raceway museum and conversed with the docent who at one point owned Lew Spencer's Morgan. He was familiar with the racing Ace and his thoughts were that it would be hard to trace. Interesting fellow who while he didn't race he crewed for a bug eye (frog eye to those on the other side of the pond) and worked flag crews at the old Riverside track. He gave a great tour of their collection if anyone is ever in the Riverside area.

The Ace & Aceca site shows an old advert asking £8,000-12,000 and it was in the January 2013 Bonhams’ Scottsdale auction with an estimate of  $85,000-100,000 and was unsold at $75,000.
