Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Good article in Classic and Sports Car
« on: April 15, 2016, 11:59:45 »
I've done some research. The hood operation on the 306 appears to be exactly the same as my Ace, I compared with several 306 cabriolet videos on Youtube. The Ace hood appears to be shorter than the 306. The hydrolic unit, pump and six soleniod valves, came in two versions on the Peugeot, my unit is very similar (I'd say identical) to the earlier version. The control unit is "badged" AC with a stick-on label but I suspect it is similar internally if not the same as the 306 cab ECU. My reasoning is the physical process of hood operation is identical (watch the video). I note that a large relay in the circuit is from Audi on my Ace. I'm not suprised the parts come from or are used by other manufactures, this is nothing new in the car manufacturing business. E.g The wing mirrors are from a Citroen CX series 2, fitted on the Ace, TVR, Aston Martin etc., headlights can be found on BMW and Porsche.

The nice think about all this is that detailed info on the operation and fixit guides can be found on the Peugeotlogic.com web site, which can help us if we ever have problems.

.. CoC certification processes were introduced in the EU around 1992 and became a requirement around 1995 - 1996 so I doubt your vehicle was certified if it was built in 1988. Regulations are pretty uniform throughout the EU for import of motor vehicles. Switzerland is a signatory to the regs.
My guess is you can import your vehicle for "personal use" or as "relocation goods" without a CoC. I did this when I imported a 1995 Ace to Sweden
as I could not find a CoC issued for the vehicle. I see that Swiss regs point in this direction see :http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_privat/04392/04393/04394/index.html?lang=en. Why not ask the authorities?

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Front Lower Ball Joint
« on: June 13, 2015, 16:50:17 »
Just to ensure I didn't give the impression that my ball joint had a catastrophic failure.
Both the UK MoT and the Swedish "bilbesiktning" results indicated that the ball joint had excessive play, but not enough to take the car off the road (the car had travelled 92K UK miles). So I changed it before the situation became "catastrophic".

I think you just had very bad luck Adrian.

I would not be happy with changing the present setup without knowing the ramifications.

Hi Adrian, Max,
I see I need somewhere in the cloud to post my picture, before inserting a url into the reply text; that's not going to happen soon I'm afraid. Re the ball-joint info your most welcome, read the update in reply to Max Allen's query.

Very useful url. I see they have running board trim rubber which looks exactly the same as the rubber, used on the front wing sections nearest the door, that the bonnet rests on.

Unfortunately they don't sell flocked weatherstrip trim that I think would fit. I attach a picture of the offending trim part. As Wally says I think these are specific to the Ace and probably not available. So I´m surfing around for alternatives. The Nissan Navara pick-up from '86 -'97 looks like it could be a likely donor.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Front Lower Ball Joint
« on: June 12, 2015, 09:17:51 »
..... you do it carefully. Its not something I would tackle personally. But luckily the workshop I use used some lateral thinking.

I needed a ball joint temporarily so that we could move the car around in the workshop while awaiting new parts from UK. The workshop I use made a spare for me by holding the ball joint pin in a lathe by its threaded end and turning it at a slow speed. The pin does not move around much in its seating as the joint is quite stiff when new, those I've purchased are at least.
The tool used for cutting needs to be rated for hardended steel. The threaded end was cut off when the machining was finished. The slot for the locking pin was machined with an angle grinder.

I had this problem last year. The ball joint is from a Ford Transit as you say. The spindle has to be machined down to fit, but check the diameter of the spindle first as there are two different sizes of pin that have been used depending on which car you have apparently.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Wiring diagram
« on: February 25, 2015, 19:20:06 »
.. I changed both motors on my Ace last year. I used the Ford part numbers, paper label on the motor casing, and found second-hand replacements from a Ford Scorpio/Granada (1994). My motors were Bosch, the Bosch part number was stamped in the metal cover; something like 0130821198. Its quite easily to cross-match the Bosch number to a Ford part number.

Many thanks for the clarification. My car has gone into hibernation for the winter, I´ll see if I can identify how the dashboard is secured when I remove the instrument panel.

Nice to see you found how the instrument panel is secured (http://www.acownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3273). I have to replace all the bulbs in the instrument panel in the spring. But before I get the crowbar out which part is held by velcro, the instruments, the instrument binnacle or the whole dashboard?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / dynalite alternators
« on: October 29, 2014, 10:19:49 »
As far as I know you cannot do a straight swap alternator/dynamo. Alternators normally contain their own regulators, so the dynamo´s regulator /Control box has to be removed (requires strapping the wiring) or replaced with a dummy box.
Dummy boxes have the advantage of replacing the regulator without having to strap the existing wiring, some dummy boxes also come with a main fuse fitted. There is nothing to stop you fitting a 25A fuse to protect the existing wiring as an alternative. If you find you need more Amps replace the main cable. I would review the rest of the wiring loom and fuses too if you are adding lots of extra electrical goodies.

There is lots of info and advice from manufactures and suppliers on how to do this type of conversion on the www. Good luck /Paho

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Weight
« on: July 17, 2014, 16:21:38 »
I have slightly different figures 1750 kg, 850kg front, 950 kg rear on the chassis plate. I have different tyres though 235/50 R16 on the back and 225/50 R16 on the front, with alloy bonnet and a 4.9 litre 302 engine.

I wonder how your car was weighed, mine was weighed on a huge weighbridge, big enough for a continental truck and trailer, though it was sensitive enough to weigh a biro pen! If yours was weighed per axle or wheel there is a risk for weight transfer affecting the figures. We hoisted up my car last month and gave it a close inspection. I can confirm it has a stainless steel chassis but as to the weight we couldn´t find any apparent reason for the excess, disappointingly we didn´t find any treasure either!
