Good Morning Gary,

As you say, a nice looking car and one which was unknown to the club.

How much of a project do you want as I have a historic basket case in the garage (L800) which I am not going to get round to? I have too many projects!!

Good Evening All,

I have now almost completed the mechanical work on 'Uncle Alfred' and he is nearly ready for the road.  The attached was picture taken before indicators were added, a safety feature needed as people do not seem to understand hand signals these days. 

The last thing done was a conversion from the Solex to an SU which I have just finished.  The SU was fitted (badly) to the car when we bought it and the original Solex was put in place as a temporary measure (30+ years ago!) and I prefer the SU as it is adjustable.

The only mechanical job left is adjusting the tracking, does anyone have a figure for toe in on an AC Royal?

Next is the re-upholstery if I can get the materials during Lockdown2?

Good Morning Richard,

The seats of a Buckland are not the same as a 2 Litre (see Attachments.)  They are similar to the later 4 Door seats but the adjustment mechanism is different.

The 'Buckland' in the picture is in the Thames Ditton records as a 2 Litre Sports which means the body may have been built by ACs not Bucklands but I believe the designs are the same?

I can't say I have ever had problems with balance on the front wheels, however it would seem best, if needed, to have the leads glued to the inside rim and painted over.  Unfortunately most vintage ACs have their wheels inside out these days so it would show!
   
   The valve should be on the inside of the 5 stud wheels.

   As to your starter, it depends on which Anzani you have fitted to your car.  I have the big Anzani and all of my electrics are CAV.  In consideration of your head and sidelights and the CAV panel on your dashboard I would assume you have the big engine and CAV electrics???
   
   I have just looked at my car and cannot see any numbers on the starter and I am afraid the spares list is not any more illuminating only listing it as '12799 Electric Starter CAV'.  The number is of course an AC number as they numbered every part of the car!!  I will dig a little further into my archive and see if I can find a model number.

It is good to see so many Royals being found and restored, welcome to the club!  My own 1926 Royal 'Uncle Alfred' is now in one piece, with mechanical restoration complete, and I have managed to drive him around the village.  The next thing to be done is the restoration of the wings and bonnet.
   
   It is here I could do with some help, could some one with an original bonnet top take some photos of it, particularly close ups of the fittings as the bonnet on my car is not original and has no fittings attached??  The sides are the original louvered ones but I want to have a new top made.

The spares list I quoted does not have a date on it but is for the cars with the early type Anzani engine with the small block and intergral exhaust manifold. I would guess very early 20s to 1923 or 24?
   
   The can is illustrated and is of the type shown in your initial picture and not the Castrol can. (I have tried to attach a scan of the page but my computer refuses to cooperate!?!)
   
   A later spares list for the cars with the larger block Anzani engine also shows part 0655 but at the inflated price of half a crown!

The spares list for the four cylinder cars lists an oil can as part 0655. I assume this was supplied with each car along with a fairly extensive tool kit. A replacement would cost the princely sum of two shillings and three pence.
   
   The whole tool kit would have been kept in the box under the dickey seat.

   The chassis number is stamped on the cross member that holds the front engine mountings.  You will find it just in front of the steering box.

   Don't the prewar ignition switches have the key number on them??  The post war saloons Lucas fitting does.

Those of you with long memories will remember our 1926 Royal 'Uncle Alfred'.  He is back on the road again after considerable mechanical restoration.  He managed the longest journey he has completed in over 10 years recently to a local village fete, all of 4 miles which he achieved with aplomb.
   
   Does anyone have any idea what the toe-in should be a the steering was a little dodgy???
   
   The restoration is to continue, with the wings being next, when I have confidence he can manage longer journeys, the coachworks is 35 miles away!
