Not absolutely sure about FP, I think it stands for firing point. All my books are still packed away after moving so cannot check. Does the FP mark's position correspond approximately to the expected ignition timing point? Sorry can't be more helpful. Graham.

Hi Jeff, do you have a copy of Rinsey Mills' book Original Ace and Cobra? Invaluable guide to originality.

Are you looking primarily for USA suppliers? A lot of what you need is available in the UK from various places. Do you use eBay at all? Some starters:-

various brightwork: same as early Cobra, try www.europaspares.com
   10. Inside door locks: MG T series of the period
   13. Wiring harness: Autosparks: www.autosparks.co.uk
   38. Classic Autos of Kings Langley, Herts, UK can make these.
   42. Yes they did. Barry Howsley (ACOC member) often has one for sale (difficult to find) and he knows Aces.
43/44. Gauges are not easy. Speedo physically same as Triumph TR of period, except printing is different. The smaller gauges are again mostly available but not necessarily with the correct markings. I ended up finding a specialist who would print the dials and make up six complete sets and advertised in the club magazine for other owners to come in on the deal. My supplier is now defunct unfortunately.
   Hope that helps a little.

Hi Gary, glad it is all going back together again.

Hope you don't mind me saying, but could I suggest that it is better to get the engine thoroughly hot and cooled down again before re-torquing the head nuts? This heat cycling allows the castings, liners and gaskets etc. to settle down. Then repeat after one week and again after one month if the vehicle is used regularly (or maybe one month / 3 months if not used much). Look forward to hearing all is sorted in due course. Graham.

Hope it was juat a poor head gasket that failed. You probably know that cylinder liner projection is critical on these engines. Are you brave enough to (attempt to) take the liners out to check the condition of the figure of 8 gaskets at the bottom? Or will you just replace the gasket (assuming liner heights OK) and hope that is the end of it with correct torquing and retorquing of the head?

   Hope all goes well. Graham.

Congratulations on your appointment and thanks for taking it on.

I remember the Dutch meeting based on Zandvoort in 1987 very well... especially Margaret Dunn taking the Ladies prize having driven Art Foley's 427 S/C after its rebuild at the factory, following his crash at Luxembourg the year before. And a very tight and sandy circuit it was too. Lovely!

Would be very tempted by a re-run [^]

Thanks for the update and photos (Clive?).

Out of interest, I asked the NZ seller if he had a selling price. He is the grandson of the original owner. He said he was seeking offers and that the highest he had received was £10,500.

Is the grey car the one once owned by Bernard Garrett and Stan Moyce. I was talking to Stan the other week and he was saying his car was grey and wondered if it was still around. Does anyone know?

Wow, congratulations Rob! What a saga!

How about buying the 1913 AC Fivet currently for sale in NZ, as an antidote to all this modern stuff?

General Forum / Views on originality....?
« on: September 22, 2015, 16:57:39 »
I think that it is simply a question of originality - you only have it once and if a car has deteriorated to the extent that significant parts have to be replaced, then so be it, whether to original specification or not as the owners decides or can afford.

So how many original older cars are there really in existence? As a percentage of those made, very few, I would wager.

Just because a car has had significant parts replaced, that does not make it a lesser one, just different. These changes are all a part of its history and should be understood as such.

This is a small club with around 600 members worldwide and the number of cars originally produced by AC is minute by motor industry standards. I don't know how many members come onto the forum, but the number will not be large, so please bear this in mind.

Attending a few events and talking to other members and your model registrar will help you a lot. Also you can get the members' list and look for owners in your locality to contact.

After all, the exclusivity of the vehicles is one of their attractions, is it not? [:)]

Welcome to the forum, and hopefully the club. If you join in January you will have the advantage of two month's free membership if I understand the rules correctly.

Best of luck with the full restoration. Is this something you can undertake yourself?
