Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Spare tire hold down
« on: March 23, 2008, 14:36:53 »
In trying to make the gas cap/filler area fit correctly I had the reove the side trunk panel which meant I had to lower my gas tank. In doing that, I damaged (actaully complete broke it off) the bung where pickup tube goes in and so I had to remove the tank completely for repair. Since it is out it gives me a chance to fix another problem and that is mounting the spare tire hold down. I had to make a new floor for the trunk and never put the hole in for the hold down since I did not have one. I would now like to drill the hole, but need help identifying what it looks like and how it attaches. Is it an L shaped piece,or is it a standard bolt that is somehow fastened to the cross brace. Also, is there a special piece that goes on top the wheel that the hold down nut presses against? I do not have the hold down nut, but can probably make something work if I can figure out the rest.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Looking for example of Ace color
« on: March 21, 2008, 13:51:22 »
For the Aces and Acecas (and maybe other ACs) there are references for a Red color that is named “Mail Red”. Does anyone have a link to an example of this color or can offer a description of what it looks like (light, dark, ruby, etc)? I am trying to link some history on an early Ace and this color may provide a clue for a connection.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Photograph question-AC Factory
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:26:40 »
I was wondering if anyone can put a date to this photograph. I found it in a copy of an article from Classic and Sportscar from Oct 1983 and am trying to figure what date the picture is from.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Gas Cap/Filler attachment
« on: February 10, 2008, 03:57:29 »
I'm getting closer to having my car back on the road and have another question. Since my car came to me in pieces, I put things back together with what I had and I am not sure I have all of the pieces for the gas cap filler area. I have the gas cap, a large washer that looks like it fits the gas cap, and a piece of steel pipe with internal threads that the gas cap screws into. Are there any other pieces that help cushion the area around the body or do I have everything? It looks to me like the inner trunk panel will be putting some stress on the pipe/gas cap and in turn putting stress on the body, but maybe I am overly concerned with something that is not an issue.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace -Bristol Racing book
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:36:02 »
I see where John McClellan has listed that he has (had)some copies of the his and Tony Bancroft's book on the Racing Ace Bristols. Does anyone know how to confirm if there are still copies available, and if so, how I would go about getting a Sterling Cheque/PO on the left side of the pond? I have only bought oversees via credit card and so am not sure how to do this.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Re-assy questions
« on: December 24, 2007, 16:34:46 »
AEX125 is back from the painter and I am beginning the re-ass'y process and have some questions about how things should go back together.
   1. Which direction do the bonnet locks face? In other words, is the hinge placed towards the windshield or the front of the car.
   2. For the door weatherstripping, does it attach to the body or the door?
   3. I recently ordered some new tailight gaskets and the ones that came are much thinner on the edge than the ones I want to replace. Should I be using the thicker or thinner versions?
   4. One of the phenolic pieces that go between the windshield wiper wheel box and the body is broken. Is there a source for these or does one need to buy an entire wheelbox?
In many pictures I have looked at I have seen things done different ways wrt to the above and am wondering what is considered correct, although with these cars I realize there may not be a correct as each car may be different.
TIA and wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Anyone recognize this linkage?
« on: July 06, 2007, 06:38:32 »
When I bought AEX125 it came home in many boxes and while I have been able to identify most of the parts, there a piece of linakge I have been unable to ID. It looks like some type of throttle linkage, but I am not even sure if it is from an Ace. Does anyone recognize it? I know the picture is not very clear, but maybe someone will recognize it or be able to say it is not Ace related.
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Rechroming head light rings
« on: June 10, 2007, 17:08:17 »
I am getting ready to rechrome some parts and was wondering if it would worthwhile having the headlight rings rechromed. Are there any suppliers providing a hi quality (chrome that will last, good base metal, and look correct) replacement part? The ones I have, have a couple of small dents that would need to be repaired and if there are any good replacements, it might be cheaper to get the new ones.
   Thanks,
   Jay

In case anyone is looking, this just showed on the Shelby Forum. The usual disclaimers apply as I know nothing of the car, just passing along the info.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Steering Box value
« on: May 06, 2007, 17:01:08 »
I have a chance to pick up an original ACE steering box, but am unsure of its value. Does anyone know how much they go for or if they were used on anything other cars?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Sealing the trunk/inner fender area
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:51:27 »
Does anyone know how the factory sealed the trunk area where the triangles meet just inboard of the rear wheels as I am trying to ensure no water or dust enters the trunk? The area I'm talking about is where the upper trunk shelf meets the body/inner fender area, where 3 frame triangles meet up. It doesn't look like the shelf could be made to fill it in, so I was wondering if a rubber flap was used or if there is a piece that covers from the bottom side. I am working on pieces that seal by wrapping around the top side of the triangles, but from the pictures I have seen, it doesn't look like that is how the factory did it.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / History/Restoration work for AEX125
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:33:35 »
I'm still trying to find out the history of AEX125, and as is said 1 picture is worth a thousand words so I have put together a web page (link below)that shows what I have found out about the car so far as well as showing some of the restoration work that has been going into it. So far I have been able to trace the history to 1982-83, but since I have no other information since it left the factory in '56, so I am left with a 26 year gap. Sorry for the small pics, but I am on dial up so I needed to keep them small. Feel free to let me know if any of you have any suggestions on how to present the info that might be more effective and feel free to pass the link along if you think someone might have info or be interested.

   Here is the link

PS I can forward better (ie larger) and more pics to anyone that thinks they may recognize the car, but needs more info.
   Thanks,

When I removed the top/side curtain ferrules on my Ace I ended up destroying most of them due to the fact they were rusted in place. I am now in the process of making some new ones and noticed that the inner diameter is not constant on the 2 that I was able to salvage. For most of the length of the ferrule it has an ID of 25/64", but for the top 1/2" it is slightly wider. I do not have any side curtains or top bows as of yet (let me know if anyone has any spares that they want to part with) so I cannot check to see if the wider diameter at the top serves any purpose. Can someone check (or does anyone know) if the top or side curtain has a shoulder that needs the extra width to fit properly? I would like to make sure I have everything correct before sending the parts out for chroming. I believe these are same as was used on the Cobras, so info from a Cobra owner would work.
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Early Ace fuel line routing
« on: February 03, 2007, 01:28:58 »
Does anyone know if there was a standard fuel line routing used on the early Aces? Currently I have the line routed along the main frame tubes but dipping below them when they encounter a cross tube. This means the fuel line dips lower than the frame rails which concerns me a bit as do not like the fuel line in an unprotected place. Also, should the line be rubber or was it a hard line?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Steering boss interchange on an Ace
« on: January 20, 2007, 06:19:30 »
In looking at the different steering wheel centers that came with Ace's and Cobras, I think I like the AC emblem versions and would like to put that on my car and remove the center section that has the turn signal as a part if it.(My turn signal switch/center cap is very beat up and non-usuable) In order to make this change, I will need to relocate the turn signals. I can either use a switch on the dash, and keep the same steering wheel boss; or use a later version Cobra turn signal but I think that would require a different steering wheel boss. I have 2 questions;
   1. If I use the existing boss, is there an easy way to attach the AC center cap? It looks like there is a gaping hole if I remove the center section, with no visible place to attach the center cap to.
   2. If I go the the Cobra turn signal version, will the Cobra version boss attach to my existing steering column without modification?
   Thanks,
   Jay
