Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Rack and Pinion Conversion
« on: September 21, 2008, 04:46:22 »
I am thinking about making a change to R & P steering on 1078 and was wondering what options are available. I think Ben Yates did a kit some time back that used an MG rack, but are there any other conversions that have been done by others and what parts are needed other than the rack? I am especially interested in how the steering column is handled for the conversions and if the existing steering box pedastal is used.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Suspension Bushings
« on: September 14, 2008, 04:11:14 »
I am working on getting AEX1078 on rolling wheels again and am in the process of re-assembling the suspension and have a couple of questions.
   1. For the inner bushings on the A frames, are washers used between the bushings and the contact points on their mounting brackets; and is there a washer between the castellated nut and the bushing? AEX 125 has metal bushings instead of the rubber ones so it is not of much help as an example.
   2. Are any of the suspension pins (ie bolts) common to any other british cars of the era?
   Thanks,
   Jay

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AEX672 on E-bay
« on: September 11, 2008, 16:14:51 »
AEX672 is up for sale on Ebay. Looks to be a very nice car, but the price seems a bit steep compared to what I have seen recently. Does the asking proce reflect the current market or is the owner hoping/wishing for a live one?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace bell housings for different engines
« on: September 01, 2008, 16:45:03 »
As I try to figure out what engine to use for AEX1078, ( I am leaning towards a 2.6) I am trying to understand what bellhousings can be used. Is there an readily available bellhousing to mate the 2.6 to Moss gear box; and if I go with the Volvo gear box identified by Keith, what bell housing can be used for the 2.6/volvo combo?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AEX125 finally finished
« on: August 22, 2008, 06:45:07 »
While we all know restorations are never really finished, I am declaring victory and saying I am finally done with AEX125. It took 8 years to get it to this point and I couldn't have done without a lot of help including many people on this forum.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Spring finish
« on: August 16, 2008, 21:49:10 »
I am working on redoing some suspension springs and after dis-assembling them I am unsure of what their finish should be before re-assembling them. It looks like they may be a natural finish for most of the length of each leaf and then painted at the ends. Were the leafs painted before re-assembly and the paint has worn off on mine, or do they get assembled and then painted after assembly. Also when re-assembling, should grease be applied in between the leafs or do you let the grease get in from the Denso tape that they are wrapped with?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / A-Arm attaching points
« on: July 27, 2008, 06:36:00 »
I'm a little further along on 1078 now and have run into the next problem. There are pieces (brackets?) welded to the main tubes that the A-arms attach to and on one of my front ones the pin is frozen solid in it. I ended up cutting through the pin to get the a-arm off, but I still could not get the pin out even after much heating and beating.I have a spare bracket from the same side that is marked "rear" and am wondering if it is different than the front ones. When I compare the spare one to the one still on the tube, it looks exactly the same, but maybe there is a subtle difference between the front and rears? Does anyone know if the  front and rear ones are are interchangeable on the same side?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Removing rear hub
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:22:34 »
I am trying to remove the rear hub on AEX1078 and am having trouble breaking it free. The manual says to use a hub drawer (which I assume is equivalent to a wheel puller) but I do not have one that fits wire wheel hubs. Does anyone have any special tricks that would make removing the hub easier if there is not a wheel puller available?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Seat Rail
« on: July 08, 2008, 21:09:11 »
AEX 125 came back from the upholsterers last week and over the weekend I realized it came back missing the lower outboard seat rail on the passenger side. They have scoured their shop and cannot find it so now I need to find a replacement. Does anyone have a cross reference for a replacement seat rail that might be used on a different make of car? The piece I need is the one that goes through the floor and is bolted down and goes against the one bolted on the seat. The other 3 pieces (inboard upper and lower, outboard upper) are still there so I only need the 1 piece.
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Holman Moody article
« on: July 06, 2008, 16:29:22 »
There was a link posted on the Shelby Club website that goes to an article on Holman Moody. In the article (actually an interview) there is talk about an early installation of a Ford 260 into an Ace in the UK. Anyone know anything about this car?
Here is the link and the Ace section is about 3/4 of the way down

Yesterday I brought home the remains of AEX1078. As you can see from the picture it is going to need a LOT of work and I am sure I will be needing much help from all of you. From what I have pulled out of boxes it is probably about 90% complete, but I am not sure everything is usuable as it has sat outside for many years. A couple of quick questions; On what is left of the firewall piece, there is a small (1" in diameter)piece that I do not recognize. It is shown in the 2nd picture and can anyone identify it? Also, is there any detailed information (on line sources or books?) on the suspension pieces including bolts (thread pitch, size etc) and how it all goes together?
Thanks in advance and I am sure I will have many, many, more questions. AEX125 was a basket case when I bought it also, but the chassis had been restored so I am breaking new ground with 1078.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Moss Motors Racing DVD
« on: June 14, 2008, 16:59:57 »
I've noticed that Moss Motors has a DVD that contains vintage racing movies taken in the late 50s at race tracks in Southern California. Has anyone viewed this DVD or know how much Ace action there is on it?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Grab Handle Gaskets
« on: April 14, 2008, 06:05:51 »
In most of the pictures I see of the grab handles on Aces, there appears to be a spacer/gasket of some type between the handle and the body. Is this a rubber piece or is it made from something else? Can anyone provide a close up picture so I know what I am looking for or what it is I need to make?
   Thanks,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace engine mount pictures?
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:11:47 »
I'm looking at some old pictures of a basket case Ace and am trying to figure out what engine it came with. Does anyone have a link or some pictures of the difference between the motor mounts for the 3 different engines?
   Thanks,
   Jay
