Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / ace bristol shocks

I just heard back from Koni.  The numbers you have for front and rear shocks are correct for Ace.  Unfortunately they are no longer available.  They also told me that my other shocks are from an odd assortment of cars.  80-1505 from VW karmon Ghia, 80-1966 VW van/bus, 82-1355 Maserati 4000, 82-1593 Maserati Ghibli.  The forum discussion on the designated Spax makes me continue my new shock search.  Maybe I should just see about getting my Armstrong shocks rebuilt.  If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks for the info.  Apparently none of the Koni shocks are from or for Bristols.  According to Koni (they finally got back to me) these shocks are from other cars.  Anyone need shocks for VW Microbus?  Koni has no current #s for Bristols.  I'll send them your list and see what they say.  Spax doesn't recognize the #s on may shocks.  They gave me the #s you sent.  Apparently Spax changed their #s in 1970 but they have no info on the pre-1970 #s.  So maybe they are correct, just old.

I'm making progress on 1151.  My body man has done a fantastic job with a very frustrating project (for him).  He has pulled out all the body panels, no new panels.  Dimensions have been hard for him.  Fortunately, I have the other Bristol to measure.  He hopes to finish the body and paint by the end of the year. I'll email you some photos.

The other car is down to bare chassis and body panels.  The frame has been painted and engine/transmission ready to go.  Diff and front/rear suspension/brakes should be done by the end of the month. Hopefully it will be on the road by early next year.  If I had more time, I might make more progress.

Again, thanks for the help.  If anyone can identify the Spax #s, I would appreciate hearing.

Thanks for the lead.  I'll make the contact.  I was hoping that there might be a source in the USA, but maybe not.  It looked like the early Cobras might have the same a-arms and that some of the vintage racers might have found a source. I 'll try Hawkcars.

Some of the details you are seeking are already on this website,  go into register for your model, For Ace Bristol all data is available, however it is only as accurate and upto date as members. owners and enthusiasts allow.  The more information fed to respective official ACOC Registrars the more usefull and accurate the record, it must be a two way dialogue.

if you specific data is not available contact your registrar, in the case of Aceca AC engined,  contact John Lewis on  johnatbvrladotcodotuk

John has copy of Thames Ditton official records and is very helpfull.  Another avenue is to email John Owen AC Cars in Malta as they are supposed to be the official most ACcu8 register..... would be interesting to see who responds first and who has most info....... my money £s orv $ss is on John.

Seriously touch base with both Johns and feed back on the Forum would be a interesting exercise...  Pheeewwww im exhausted.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / differntial bearing housing
« on: April 27, 2017, 00:10:23 »
In the process of refurbishing my differential, I have discovered that the differential was previously rebuilt without any half-shaft Bearing Housing dowel pins .  In fact it appears that the Housings have been replaced in that the pin holes in the Housings do not align with the holes in the differential casing.  How big of a problem do I have?  Can I rebuild without the dowel pins?  Do I have to fabricate new bearing housings?  If so, do I need to line bore both bearing housings?  Any guidance would be appreciated.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / fog light wiring
« on: November 27, 2016, 05:27:45 »
BEX1002 is moving toward resurrection. Car came with fog lights, but they weren't connected when I purchased the car.  There is no evidence of a separate switch to turn them on.  Are they usually connected to the headlight switch?  Early Jaguar XK120 had a 4 position switch (off, side, headlight, fog) with a separate keyed switch.  I haven't been able to find any information on how thew fog lights were wired on the Ace.  Can anyone help me?  Aloha   Terry

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / dashboard illumination
« on: September 18, 2016, 03:00:23 »
I am in the process of restoring BEX1002.  The next task is restoring the dashboard.  The leather is new, gauges restored, and new wiring harness in hand.
Now I need to figure out how the gauges are illuminated at night.  The old dashboard was a wiring mess.  The behind the dashboard lighting was 2 small bulbs without any housing or shielding.  It must have illuminated the floor and back of the gauges fine, but couldn't have done much to help reading the gauges.  I've looked through various references, but can't find any information. Can anyone help me with pictures, description of lighting housing, etc?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / spare chassis available
« on: August 06, 2012, 23:56:18 »
BEX1151 is expected to return from the body shop in the next few months.  Spare chassis no longer needed.  This is a custom built AC Ace chassis fabricated by Chris Lawrence (of Lawrence Tune and Morgan fame) during his California period.  Fabricated for racing with heavier chassis tubes, right hand drive, and rack/pinion steering.  Chassis is in San Francisco Bay Area.  Shock absorbers, a-arms, rear spring, and differential have been removed.  Bare chassis with rack/pinion available.  Make offer.  Contact ttcars@att.net if interested.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / girling brake master cylinders
« on: February 24, 2012, 18:41:52 »
I am considering converting to a dual brake system for my BEX1002.  There was an old post indicating that changing to Girling #74660152-060 might work.  The post is no longer on the forum.  Did this conversion work?  Is there another unit that works? Has anyone tried a Girling #64676597 from a non-servo 66-67 Cortina?

Is there a replacement for the original single circuit Girling #310680 master cylinder since TRW says this unit is no longer available?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / king pin thrust washer lubrication
« on: December 04, 2011, 04:32:57 »
I am replacing the king pin, thrust washer and bushing on the front suspension of my Bristol.  I noticed that the grease channeling in the bushing allows grease to drain out the bottom of the lower bushing but there is no channel opening to allow grease to flow to lubricate the thrust washer. Both the installed bushing and new bushing only allow grease to drain from the bottom of the lower bushing.  I would think the thrust washer should get lubricated.  Am I wrong?  Do I have the wrong new bushing?  Do I need to install the new bushing upside down and re-drill the grease inlet hole in the side of the bushing? If so , was the existing bushing installed wrong?  Am I missing something?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Exhaust header color
« on: October 13, 2011, 01:30:10 »
Is there a correct color for exhaust headers for Ace Bristols?  I have seen them in white and black, but don't know which (if either) is correct. Any suggestions?

« on: August 27, 2011, 20:02:31 »
Help.  I have Koni and Spax shocks in my acquired spare parts inventory but can't find out if they are the correct #s for my Ace Bristol. The numbers are: Spax 463 DS967 and Koni 80-1966, 80-1505, 82D-1355, and 82D-1593.  Are any of these correct?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AC Racing Green
« on: June 11, 2008, 22:32:09 »
Can anyone help me figure out what AC Racing Green really looks like?   I am in the process of restoring BEX1151 which has some vintage racing history in the USA and I thought Racing Green might complement to this history. However, I've never seen the color in person, only photos which may or may not be accurate. Is there a source for a paint formula or an actual sample that a paint shop can scan to create a formula?  Any help or leads would be great.
