Duly noted thanks.

I'm not big into originality when it comes to clutches, I'd fit a diaphragm clutch, which are lighter and more readily available. Something like an uprated TR6 clutch plate which is also 8.5" might be a good donor. I have an uprated 8.5" MGB clutch on my Bristol engine, it does mean changing the dowels from two to three though.

Those Zephyr flywheels are massive by today's standards, I wonder if not only was the car heavier, but with post war fuels not being so consistent, perhaps the large flywheel smoothed out the odd incomplete combustion event?

Hi I wonder if this might help with the gear lever remote shortening?

Chris at Chessman sent me the prices for the Raymond Mays parts including the Weber inlet manifolds.

@ Klassic Metall Ref the Youtube video I can only assume the owner of the engine was going for torque rather than power, at one point the engine builder mention that the engine is to be used with a single carb (to each their own). You mentioned clutches, what is the clutch problem solution pls?

Thanks for other info gents.

Fintan, can you share what you find out please, particularly which bell housing do you need to mate the moss gear box to the Ford block.

I'm aware that the original Ford bell housing and gearbox were cast iron, so not preferable for a sports car. I also know that the Ford gear box came with two sets of ratios, the Zephyr Six ratios would work for an Ace possibly, but the Zephyr Four would be too low/wide. Zephyr boxes are also available with Overdrive.

Zephyr Six     3.16, 2.21, 1.41, 1:1, R3.3
Zephyr Four   4.41, 2.35, 1.50, 1:1, R 4.67

For reference the Bristol BWCR 12 I believe is; 2.92, 1.82, 1.29, 1:1

I've just caught up with the 'Zephyr 6 parts supplier' thread and have written to Chesman Motorsport with a manifold enquirey.

If anyone would like to loan a manifold to be scanned the offer still stands.

Bear in mind making your carbs more Ethanol robust if you have your carbs apart perhaps?

I have a Mays Mk3 head but no Weber manifolds, so I'm interested in this thread. I know the correct carbs are; 3 x Weber DCOE 40  (30mm choke, 110 main jet) or 3 x 1& ¾ SU. As specified by the Homologation document;

https://historicdb.fia.com/sites/default/files/car_attachment/1601035801/homologation_form_number_67_group_gt.pdf

I've never seen the Weber manifolds for sale, there was a web site advertising them, but I don't think they're still in business. Does anyone know of a source? I should be able to get a manifold scanned at work if there was a volunteer to loan one. This might enable people to have a set laser sintered or fabricated to at least hold the carbs in the correct position.

Also looking at Homologation document the Camshaft has 248 degrees duration which looks a bit short for a sports application, it's probably the standard Ford cam. Does anyone have any guidance on a better cam and how to get hold of one? Plus I have no information on what the exhaust manifold should look like.

Of further interest perhaps to some, is a chap on Youtube who takes one of these engines out to 2.9L, with a +0.120" overbore and a 4mm offset pin stroke increase. General consensus from some hot rodding forums is that a 0.125" overbore is the limit.

Hi DPK,

Did you solve the gear lever problem, with it being too far rearwards? In your #300 picture it looks like it will be outside of your trans cover?

Perhaps of interest; There is an engine builder on YouTube assembling a 2,866cc Zephyr six. This is achieved with a 0.100" overbore using the +40 thou Volvo P1800 piston. Then he has had the big end bearings ground down to the 2.2L Mk1 Zephyr bearing size, and offset in the process to achieve about another 4.5mm of stroke. He plans to have a special conrod made up.

Link is https://youtu.be/quw64BqWZks , he has only done the first episode so far.

This got me thinking that if you were brave and not building a race engine, you could use a Zephyr Mk1 -0.040" bearing to offset another 1mm. Various Zephyr forums acknowledge that a 0.125" overbore is feasible using the Bedford or Holden pistons, and even 0.140" Valient piston has been tried.

Well of course I had to put these combinations in a chart! What's not to love of the idea of a three litre straight six Aceca.

15:1 would be very low for an Ace.

I've attached a pic of the gearing page from the Ace FIA document, which agrees with the Rinsey Mills book. With the standard 3.9 dif ratio, the Ace first gear overall is 11.4:1 (used with a 16" wheel with a 550 tyre).

If you're looking for alternative ratio it might be worth sharing your current dif and box speeds.

If you begin to think about keeping your existing box together and fitting an alternative, perhaps a five speed, then it's worth noting that the Bristol box when used in Aces (not sure about Bristols) did not have a remote control housing as the powertrain sits very aft in the chassis.

AC used quite few Ford parts including the RS2600 and Cobra engines, some heaters etc, so fitting something like a Ford Type-9 wouldn't be too out of keeping (imho). I believe you still need to solve the remote change problem though.

I'd guess it's more of a gear set change as you'd need a new lay shaft and 1st gear (for the main-shaft).

It might be an idea to post on the Bristol forum, if you haven't already. http://www.bristolcars.info/forums/

I've used Peter Best for 25+ years. I typically ensure my sprint/hill-climb Sprite for about £80/yr and all sorts of other things including a Honda C90. I recently sold a MGB GT V8, and whilst on route to pick my AC up a couple of days later, I gave them a call asked them to swap the insurance from the MG to the AC, I paid an extra premium for the additional value of the AC, and that was that, all done whilst driving.

I've only claimed for one windscreen so I could have a laminated one to race the Austin Healey!

Looks v original with the exception of the engine. I couldn't see engine mounts to comment. I also tried to work out what the triangular bracket bolted underneath the rear wishbone was??
