Will be racing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion AKA Rolex Monterey Historic Races this weekend.
Raced in the Pre-Reunion last weekend. New 15-inch wheels and Dunlop Racing tires made a big difference. Finally have the Webers dialed in for max power. Nice upgrade from the Solex'.

Sorry to have missed you Gus!
I had a fantastic time. The car ran great. My group was VERY fast so I spent my time with a TR-3 and a Lotus 14. Incredible week. Did you see the Aceca run?

No, sorry to say I did not. I was in the area for 4 days. Spent the first afternoon ogling the lots at Russo and Steele and RM, the second day at the Conocorso, the third day in the paddock at the historics and Gooding auction and the fourth at Pebble beach as well as the second day of the Gooding auction. It took me 5-6 hours to see all the cars in the paddock. Saw just one other AC out there, not counting Lynn Park's stand with seven Cobras and some of the others.
It was my first time out to the peninsula. Absolutely fabulous experience. Never seen this much eye-candy in my life!
Would have loved to chat you up on your car. I own AEX 674. The old AC engine... slow... I saw some video of your car running some time ago. That Bristol sounds fantastic.
When I get some time, I will post some photos. I think I must have some 900 of the various days.

I hope my old new AC Weller engines will be passing the Bristol's sometime soon which hopefully might change your views.

I hope so too. Do you think these new engines will rival the horse power of the Bristols? My engine runs great, thanks to the parts you supplied, but I doubt it has more than 90HP. Although the contrast between my 289 race engine and the AC might be so high, it just feels like that. Regardless, the Aceca is a joy to drive.

I am pleased you enjoy the Aceca, i do expect to gain more power & have a greater potential to raise the RPM, having a stiffer crank & a good harmonic damper should help, breathing will be greater with my new camshafts & rocker design so we should get more mixture into the cylinders, however this is all to be proven!
I am making a new engine to fit into an AC Ace which i hope will be on its wheels by the end of the year, the problem i have that i am not a racer so will need to have somebody do that bit.
The engine will have my new Aluminium Head also so it will be 99% new!

I was hoping it would be done yet. Ran into some hiccups. Should be on the road soon. Very curious about your new car/engine. keep us posted on the developments. Shouldn't be too hard to find a volunteer on the race-bit! Can you post photos of the engine and car?

Car not rolling yet, still getting critical parts made like Front Stub Axles & Brakes etc, axles being made from forgings & not billet, Engine in build at present but apart from the head being aluminium it will not look much different to an ordinary engine.
Will send pictures when more advanced.

800-some photos from the Monterey week. It took 4-5 hours to download all of these. They are all in full size. I don't claim to be a good photographer, but there sure are a lot of special cars in it. few AC's, not counting the gaggle of Cobras.

Gus - Thanks for the link to your great photos. I was there on Saturday and Sunday as well and had pretty much the same itinerary as you, although for me it was only a 3 hour car ride to get there. Just an incredible event.

Really need a few full days to get round the whole event, Any idea what the two Ace's went for at the Russo & Steele Auction,BEX404 a very well know and well restored Ace Bristol and BEX397 the Cobra-ised Ace Bristol. ( real shame that some one spends all that time, effort and Money to make a Hybrid ..... No longer a Ace Bristol or a Cobra. .. [:(].. .. [?]
Should be interesting to see how each faired under the hammer

There was a couple years ago another car numbered BEX404 (TSU 173) in the UK. It was though RHD, green/green with a black stripe across the front fenders.
Was it ever clarified as to the correct id for this car?
It appears that BEX404 has been sold annually at various auctions (Barrett Jackson at Scotsdale), Gooding at Monterey going for $258,ooo in 2009 and 264,000 in 2009.

The real BEX404 was partially restored by Robert Pass, he moved it on to finance the restoration of His dream Car, a Austin
Healey 100M
The restoration was finished by Crail Autos to their usual high standard.
Not sure what happened to either of the two UK clone Aces
BEX404 and AEX163 which were sold via Coys.... ( pictures in ACtion May 2002, page 21 )

Could that be a 100S instead of a 100M?
Just one letter difference but big difference in specification and even more so in value!

You are spot on, My error in typing, It should have read 100S and as you rightfully point out there sure is a difference in value between a 100M and a 100S. (Rarity of only 50 or so 100S's built with Ali body, four wheel disc braking and 132+ BHP )

Russo & Steele's auction results are online.
Apparently BEX404 didn't sell. The price listed for BEX397 (the "Cobra-ised" ACE) is $110,000. The 289 MK1 Cobra CSX2461 went for $649,000.
