Title: Mk IV Heater Core
Post by: BBK on August 01, 2012, 23:32:28
As a continuation of my saga on getting my AK 1216 road ready, my mechanic advised that my heater core was bypassed a while back and he has taken it out of the car.  Unfortunately, it is shot and not repairable.  He knows the part number but has been unable to locate a new core stateside, and has contacted Hawk Cars and AC Heritage in England per my direction to source this part and is awaiting word from them due to the time difference.  I am hoping that the forum can advise if Hawk and ACH are the proper source for the Mk IV heater core or if there are any other sources you know of.  Also, if a member has by chance, a spare heater core that is in good shape lying about that they wish to sell, please let me know as I would be interested!  Thanks to all.

My mechanic is scrambling to complete the work prior to the Monterey Historic races in a couple of weeks. I have my ticket and corral pass!  The gentleman organizing the corral at the races advised yesterday that there will be 30 original AC/Shelby Cobras in the corral and a total of 175 cars there (Shelby Mustangs, continuation and replica Cobras).  I willtake plenty of pictures and plan to post some after the event!

If your guy has no luck with Gerry or Steve, you could try Alan Faulkner-Stevens, who along with being the ACOC`s MkIV registrar runs Dragon Wheels Restorations (http://"http://www.dragonwheelsrestorations.co.uk/index.htm"), but I would have thought that it was sourced from a contemporary vehicle(admittedly, probably a UK spec vehicle) & shouldn`t be too hard to find. Post the part number & maybe someone can help!
Looking forward to seeing your Monty photos!

Rob! You don't need a heater in Monterrey!!

Button the thing up and get in and drive!!

   See you at dinner!

Nik, good suggestion re..Alan   I will also ask for the part number as well and post it here. Gus, I will mostly tough it out but it is nice to have a heater especially on the Northern California coast in summer!  As Mark Twain said....the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco!  The tourists are already freezing waiting for the cable cars!  Look forward to meeting you at dinner.

The mechanic just advised that the part is off of a 1987 Euro Ford Escort 1.4 litre diesel, Part # 83AG18B539AA.  Hawk Cars is looking for one.  No other options as of yet.  They did not bring the European Ford Escort over to the States and we had our own (far inferior) version for the U.S. market, thus, no matching heater cores available in the USA.  Trying to put the car back to original specification, heater and all, thus wanting to get a new core installed (dash is currently partially apart).

Robert, I tried to email you through the forum, but it was undelivered. Please contact me via  my forum contact details (http://"http://www.acownersclub.co.uk/forum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=4") with your email address. I located the part & have spoken with Gerry Hawkridge, so hopefully you can place an order immediately.
   Cheers, Nik.

Hi Nik.  I received your emails regarding the part and responded to those but wanted to thank you again on the forum for your terrific help to me on this. It is greatly appreciated.  I looked at the part and it seems to be exactly what I am after.  I forwarded the details to my mechanic just so he can visually check it and check the dimensions against the unit he removed from my car.  This looks to solve my problem though and it is a huge help to me.  Thank you again Nik!!

My mechanic compared my heater core to the EBay core and they match in terms of dimensions and look of the unit. I tried to purchase the EBay unit but ends up the U.K. seller does not ship to the USA and the EBay site would not allow me to contact the seller to see if they would make an exception. So,my mechanic is supposed to contact Gerry Hawkridge to see if he can buy the EBay unit and then ship direct to them.  Have not gotten further word from my mechanic so hoping this is in the works.

Nik, I greatly appreciate your help...thank you.  I believe my mechanic (Craig Hill of Top of the Hill Performance Center) or one of his guys there (Clint) have contacted Gerry but I am in the dark as to what, if any, specific communication they might have had with him re. the EBay core.  Craig is not the greatest in terms of his responding to my email inquiries to him and is hard to get on the phone, so don't know what arrangements, if any, he has made with Gerry.  I will try to find out what they have done regarding securing the EBay heater core from Gerry.  Apart from the EBay unit, apparently, there are no such heater cores anywhere in the USA and Top of the Hill has inquired with some radiator shops about making up one from scratch or repairing my old unit, to no avail.  Guess it is something these shops won't touch!  If there is a way the EBay seller would consider a "one-time" exception, and sell that core to me here in the U.S., that would be terrific.  Thank you again for you kind help.

They are just German radiator shops and will ship to Germany and worldwide, to "rest of the world" or the U.S. Shipping is more or less between 40 and 50 Euros.

I could help with the transfer or  bring it with me to LA area in September.

Thanks to Nik's amazing help to locate, purchase and ship the part to my mechanic, I am hoping to have my car ready in time for Monterey.  The effort and assistance that Nik has provided has helped me immeasurably and I cannot express adequately my appreciation for all of his help.  The ACOC is a terrific community of people that helps bridge the large distances between us all and make the world a smaller (and better) place to be.

Thanks Keith!  Just spoke to my mechanic this evening and the car is coming along well.  Rear end is buttoned up with new pinion seal and wheel bearings. Rodded out
radiator and new hoses back in.  Tuned up and new fluids.  New fuel lines.  New front brake pads.   Some wiring harness work.  Other items as well!    Once the core comes in in the next few days, the dash will be reassembled and new Moto-lita wood steering wheel will be fitted to replace my stock black wheel.  New tires yet to be fitted as ones on the car are old. Fingers crossed that it all comes together on time!

BBK, I had the heater removed from my MkIV (AK 1259) a couple of years ago while I was having some engine work done.  I never took to the Ford heater switchgear that AC used and to be honest there's so much heat soak from the engine that I'd never found the heater that necessary or useful.

I think I still have the box of 'bits' lying around in the garage somewhere.  I'll have a look and let you know.

Not being as technical as most of you, could you provide a photo of what you're trying to replace so I know exactly what I'm looking for ?

Even when it is working well I found the heater was not much use partly because the exit vents allow the hot air to “just escape”. To try and improve things I had eyeball vents built into the heater outlet in each footwell which enable the air to be directed far more effectively. It also provides the option of closing one of outlets if it’s not wanted or required.

Hi Martyn.  Thank you for your kind offer.  Nik found the part for me and it is on its way here to California.   Expected delivery this Thursday!  Just spoke with my mechanic and he expects that if the part arrives on time he should have it mostly completed by Friday this week.  Now need to decide on tires, which has been the least of my problems thus far!  Though I might not use the heater all that much, it might be good to have on cold foggy days on the CA coast, plus, I am trying to keep the car to stock specification as much as possible, heater core and all.... Nik, thanks for posting the picture!  (and for helping make the trip possible).  Keith, yes, I do owe Nik a beer and dinner!  The shop got it out the night before I left and had a possible charging issue the morning I was leaving so had to go back to the shop to have them diagnose!  Ends up my gauge is bad (though it worked fine prior to going into the shop) and the alternator is putting out enough juice......whew!  So, more greenbacks flying out of my wallet when i get back[B)]!  The car has been running like a champ and it has been a pleasure driving it around the Monterey peninsula. It is getting quite a bit of attention wherever I go.  Went to the Legends of the Autobahn show in Carmel to view my favorite all time older German machines and the Mecum auction today to look at all the great cars for sale.  Now resting up for the ACOC dinner this evening!!  Off to the track tomorrow and the Cobra corral.  My camera is ready!
