Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Cooling system pressure on Ace
« on: October 10, 2016, 20:06:18 »
As far as I'm aware the AC engined cars were fitted with 4lbs caps & the Bristol variant 7lbs.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / dashboard illumination
« on: September 21, 2016, 10:29:05 »
I've seen the bulbs mounted 90 degrees downwards from the position in the photo, so that they also illuminate the ammeter. I'd agree with nikbj68 about using the yellow LEDs, I think that you can even find them now to fit the original bulb holders.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / AC2 litre coupe 1949 For Sale
« on: August 16, 2016, 14:51:34 »
I thought pre 1960 UK registered vehicles no longer needed an MOT.

Looks like this car is in good condition, as far as you can see in the photos anyway. It's a shame so many of these cars still get scrapped or broken up for parts.

This is a fairly common problem with Moss gearboxes. Check out the following link for more info & remedies to stop it reoccurring.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AE 32 sold
« on: May 03, 2016, 08:30:07 »
Interesting, pricing is obviously a moving target, as AE32 was for sale at 295K Euro when I enquired back in March. I can confirm that the car was far from concours with many non original "features",my personal favourite being  the huge accelerator pedal, clearly necessary to command all that AC horse power!

I believe Thiesen also sold AE25 for similar sum early last year.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AEX 160 to auction April 23

Yes, there are many other MM eligible cars out there but it doesn't mean they'll automatically get a place on this very over subscribed event. I think it would be fair to say that the operators of the rally tend to favour certain rarer marks over others. For example many Vintage Bentleys have taken part over the years but none took part in the original race. The same is true of the Ace Bristol but one is competing this year, it might have something to do with it belonging to one of the event sponsors, possibly.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AEX 160 to auction April 23

At least two early AC powered Aces have sold recently in Europe, for prices approaching this amount. The cars I know of were both sold through dealers.

It would seem that the most important price factor is if the car is eligible for the Mille Miglia Retrospective. Many wealthy collectors now buy cars specifically to enter this event.

The Ace sold for $396 000 but the Buckland only achieved $66000.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Needle rollers
« on: April 26, 2016, 22:38:47 »
When the steering system on an Ace or Aceca is working correctly it should not be overly heavy. However I've found the following issues to be the cause of both heavy steering or wayward handling. Badly adjusted or setup steering boxes, bent outer & inner steering columns, binding steering idlers or ball joints, excessively wide wheels & tyres.

Another problem I've come across is the incorrect fitment of the front uprights. These are handed but are sometimes swapped over, leading to negative castor & subsequent terrible handling.

The uprights are also prone to accident damage also effecting castor angles. I've also seen a couple of Aces with the front suspension tower bent backwards from accident damage. This has the effect of increasing the castor angle also leading to heavy steering.

I believe your car is fitted with a Zephyr engine & should therefore be fitted with uprights that have only 3 degrees of castor, unlike the lighter engined AC & Bristol  powered cars that were fitted with uprights giving 5 degrees. The 3 degree uprights also seem to have been fitted to the heavier Aceca.

Anyway, it's worth having a closer look when you strip the car down to do the kingpins.

   Regards Luke.

If you mean the bushing & seal in the steering box, these are the same as used on a Triumph TR3. They are available from Triumph part suppliers such as Rimmer Bros.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Needle rollers
« on: April 19, 2016, 21:02:26 »
I've worked on cars with needle roller kingpins & ball thrust races. I've not seen a car converted from bronze bushes though. I think it would be possible to do so on Ace setup but I tend to think that the additional problems would out way any great benefits. For a start the needle rollers would need to run against a hardened steel sleeve pressed into the stub axle.

Why are you contemplating this modification, heavy steering or just worn out original components?

   Regards Luke.

Just seen the show & I quite enjoyed it, especially the sections filmed on the road. The finished car looked very nice with the new silver/blue paintwork

Now I just have to work out how to restore an Aceca in three weeks, just like in TV land.[:)]

AC Weller Engine / Engine block code
« on: April 13, 2016, 20:37:18 »
Tim, I have to say that never occurred to me but it does make sense. I wonder why they chose to identify what pistons were fitted & if that meant that the piston designs differed, different ring layouts/ thicknesses ect?

   Regards Luke.

AC Weller Engine / Engine block code

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the W stands for Wellworthy pistons. The 9/1 would be the compression ratio. I believe that some engines were also stamped with an H standing for high compression.

Hello Chris,

were you able to get your doors to fit any better in the end?
