   "Irreplaceable" trophies stolen from Goodwood
Motorsport and other trophies worth up to £15,000 have been stolen from the Goodwood estate, home of the annual Festival of Speed and Revival.
By Paul Hudson 04 Apr 2013

At least four burglars broke into the Kennels Clubhouse in the grounds of the Earl of March's 12,000-acre estate near Chichester at about 11pm on Monday. Having arrived in a dark-coloured Range Rover, they gained access via a ground floor window then smashed four glass display cabinets to steal 33 trophies, two of which were part of the Goodwood chattels and of great historic value to the house and family.

The Mobil Oil Trophy (above) holds the most sentimental value, as it was awarded to Freddie March, the current Earl's grandfather, for a class win in the 1931 JCC British Double Twelve Hour Race at Brooklands. The trophy was made by Skinner & Co, London; a shallow silver circular bowl supported by half-clad winged female figures, with baluster stem and octagonal base, 16.5in high including the plinth, which the burglars left behind.

Also stolen was the 1916 Chichester Show Sheep Trophy, a silver-gilt two-handled cup made by D & J Welby of London.

Gary Axon, Goodwood's spokesman, said: "Obviously these trophies would be very hard to sell on and we fear that they could be melted down and sold for scrap.

"The trophies which have been taken are irreplaceable. They have been in the family for decades."

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "About 28 trophies were stolen during the burglary. Sussex Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the burglary or has information which may assist police with their enquiries to contact 101 quoting serial 2394 of 11/3 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"Officers would also like to hear from anyone who has been offered trophies to buy."

Goodwood is offering an award for the return of the stolen trophies.
