Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Re: Chassis paint
« on: October 08, 2018, 16:15:04 »
Thanks for the replies. I called into a local paint suppliers and had a chat. They seemed to think that a primer then top coat and then lacquer would be the best bet.
I looked at the Frost web site and have decided to go and visit them at some point to further discuss the difference in products they sell.
My preferred powder coater is happy that the process can be achieved with good results if I want to go down that root.
So still not decided but I have a month or so to decide finally. At the moment it’s 60/40 towards paint.

Thanks Keith,
I talked with an old colleague and doubts have been put in my mind about powder coating. Those doubts may be related with your point about the type of finish selected.
The problem pointed out is that damp can ingress minor imperfections in the coating causing the base metal to rot, while the chassis can be happily rotting away the coating looks lovely.
I suppose that all depends upon the skill of application.
When all is said and done the same can be said of paint.

I am working on a 16/66 and have reached the point of addressing the chassis. I will be having it blasted to save on hours of slave labour but am still undecided on the finish.
Powder coating is easy but for originality I am edging toward paint.
Can anyone advise on quality products and suppliers preferably in the north.

Congratulations on your purchase. It looks great. Hope you have many a happy mile in it. Glad to hear that you intend to use it.
Between the AC club and VSCC you should have all the help you may need to stay running.

AC Weller Engine / Start up
« on: September 25, 2018, 17:34:01 »
The engine from my 16/66 has been rebuilt. It was in a shocking state of neglect and proved to have been bodged and abused before the neglect. Absolutely everything on the engine has been worked on from white metalling to new water jacket. At least some progress has been made towards the completion of the cars restoration.
The video of the start up is on YouTube.

Went to Finghall Village Fete today and the classic car gathering at Russ Swifts. Lovely collection of cars and people, a good pub lunch and perfect weather. Picked all the country back roads to avoid the bank holiday traffic and enjoyed the day thoroughly. Thank you Russ and the many other volunteers for your efforts.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Carburettor insulators
« on: May 19, 2018, 21:23:32 »
Can anyone advise if insulators were fitted to cars between the carburettors and the manifolds on PVT models. On many if not most post war cars with SU's carbs, an insulating spacer was fitted to stop heat transfer and vaporisation. I have had the carbs refurbished by Burlen but no such items have been supplied with the gasket sets. The car had no spacers to start with and I think this is correct.
If someone can confirm it would help the cause.

Thanks

Colin.

I used it in the Daimler Darts that I have had. Never noticed any problems regarding wear and tear. Also Never noticed f it was lighter or heavier in use. Cost may be an issue, Comma EP140 from Wilco's is a little cheaper.

The thing is to enjoy doing it.

The thought of an AC restoration rod sounds reasonable to me. The thing that differentiates any such project is the build quality. Most people look at a project with interest if it is done well and most people look at such a project with dismay if it is done poorly!

Has any progress been made with automatic reduction of images for posting ?
If not can anybody advise a simple way to go about things using an iPad ?
The images are on the iPad but when I try to post them I am informed that the file is too big.
Thanks in advance,
Colin.

Well said Graham. I am pleased that you stand up and defend the sterling efforts of the outstanding volunteers.
No I didn't offer my car this year as it is currently being stripped for restoration, a long term project. It will be offered when it is in a fit state to be shown.
I will also offer my services as a volunteer when the car is present. I don't feel eligible to help out at the moment as I know nothing about Cobras and little enough of even my own model, a 16/66 DHC. I will also be happy to help out when Work commitments allow. Unluckily I still have to find the funds to carry out the TLC that my car requires. Hopefully it will be achievable after the next couple of years.
I am not an anonymous poster wishing to demoralise the volunteers. I am a fairly new member trying to support the club by buying regalia and offer constructive criticism.
If my comments are offensive then I offer my sincere apologies to the volunteers and I promise to keep my gob shut in the future.

Robin,
Many thanks for your diligence.  I am a member of the VSCC and so will be able to use there library. It will give me an excuse to visit the Old Post Office, which is something I have been considering for a while. I will try and arrange it when I am next working around the area.
It may be of interest that I was visited today by the coach builder to discuss the body work and having it reframed. I hope to have some work started pre Christmas. It will slow down what I can do through the winter but at least it is moving on.

Graham,
thanks for coming up with that but it is the crash box that I have.

Robin,  your right it is the crash box that I am looking for information upon..and thank you for those leads. I will endeavour to search and copy them.
The weakness you mention of the casing clamps is a fault on the near side of the box. Luckily it looks upon initial viewing that I will have the means to repair it.
I understood that AC started to fit the moss box to cars after mine but I didn't realise that the ENV is considered to be such an efficient box and therefore very sort after.
If you can suggest additional information  through any other means I would be grateful.
