With regards to the question of re-torquing a head after a heat cycle, I have a BMW 328 engine with a Bristol head.
The specialist who built the engine recommended that it be re-torqued as soon as the engine had had a few gentle running-in miles on it. It has, what looks like, a solid copper gasket and it did, indeed need a bit of 'nipping down' after said period.
I seem to remember that the figure he quoted was 35ft/lbs.

Barrie, Spot on! Exactly what I hoped my post might come up with. I've got both parts in the shed and enjoy making specialist tools (I've even got a dedicated drawer for them amongst the tool chests!)

I thought some chancer might offer me a genuine Bristol  example which would then force me to re-mortgage my house!!!

Hi All. I'm after one of the Bristol cranked cylinder head spanners or info regarding what else can be used, as I'm sure there must be other ways of releasing/tightening them?
Any pointers gratefully received.

For what is essentially two 6" x 1" bits of 16g alloy, a hole in each end and a tweak, I'd be interested to know what price is charged for these highly technical parts!!!! Getting them etch-primed and paint matched to an inevitably faded scuttle would present me with more of a challenge than making them!!! let alone fitting them without removing the screen.

I have had two screen stone 'star' chips repaired in the past (other than the Aceca non-repair). Both successful repairs were well over 10mm in size, one nearer to 20mm. Both were were successfully repaired (so that you couldn't really see them!) by different repair firms and neither mentioned that there was a 'maximum' size beyond which it rendered a screen non-repairable.
Maybe things have changed, but maybe the small repairers do all they can to save a perfectly good screen that has suffered a stone chip, whereas the bigger companies would rather sell a new screen ?
cynical?  -  I don't think so.

One thing to be aware of is the problems with repairs on screens that have been treated with Rain-X of similar products.
My Aceca screen's stone chip could not be successfully repaired as I'd used Rain-x in the past.
I would have thought that the first question that a repair man would ask is 'Has this screen ever been treated with Rain-X or similar?' When my attempt was made, the 'specialist' didn't ask and I wasn't aware of the associated problems - so I had to pay him even though he knew of the problems with treated screen. When it was unsuccessful he then casually asked 'Haven't used Rain-X or anything like that, have you'

Thanks chaps.
The reason for this post was - the top nearside of the rear screen seems not to follow the contour of the aperture as well as it might.
I wondered if the rubber was getting a bit tired, hence the not-perfect fit at the top nearside. It may be that the screen was not a perfect fit in the first place, but the rubber was keeping it in line and now the mis-alignment is showing itself as the rubber yields under years of holding it correctly - maybe?
Does anyone know the thickness of the plexi screen and the thickness of the alloy lip of the aperture? - can't order any new rubber until I know and I don't want to take the screen and rubber out yet.
Does cut-to-length mounting rubber behave itself around the corners when bent, or does the mounting rubber have to be pre-formed, as it were, if so, is it available anywhere??

Yes, well done, Although it depends on one's outlook. For the vendor - yippee, brass in pocket. For the future of the younger generation popping out to buy an Ace and perpetuating the the ACOC by joining and participating - ??
The lack of ACs at the sprint, the lack of 'youth' enrolling in the club and the escalating prices may mean a decline in the club's ability to sustain itself.
It will be interesting to see how quickly the two vacant positions within the club are filled.
Getting people to take on official roles within the club can be difficult. Let's hope I'm wrong, but somehow I think the writing may be on the wall.

Ah, just had a quick look on the WOSP website. They don't do one, they do one for the Bristol and the Ford engines, but not the AC.
There are several companies the have these high torque (and sometimes gear reduction) modern starters for classics. Worth a look.
