After inspecting the now visible framework at the front end I found the following: The vertical square support tube at the front inner fender is splitted...
Has someone else faced the same problem?
The side walls of the square tube are curved and not longer flat. It looks like the tube is cracked by inside pressure or is it just rusted from inside to outside ???

The tube itself is not bended, just has curved walls.

I know this is a old thread but have some more detailed questions regarding early chassis numbers with the Rover SD1 column switches and switch cover.
I would like to convert a early car from Moto Lita to Nardi. The column itself is splined (not hex like the later cars) and has a Moto Lita boss numbered B 18 and looks like Ford and not Rover.

Are the steering column tube and the steering spindle from different cars merged together ?? Or is the column assembly completely taken over from Rover SD1?

Has anybody converted a early car with splined steering spindle/shaft from Moto Lita to Nardi using a Nardi wheel and boss or was a adapter used to mount the Nardi wheel to the Moto Lita boss?

By the way, the door lock is from a Golf 1 or Golf 2, difference between both is the plastic insert which is white or black, both will work, sometimes "France" or "Germany" is stamped into the lock, so if you have a preference..... [:D]

The striker bolts loose their plastic damper ring during the years, the doors and locks will start to rattle then and the door will scratch on the body at the rear top of the door sealing flange and damage the paint.

The striker bolt you should order from Golf 1 !!

The Golf 2 part is different a bit, the hex part of the bolt is longer in center line direction and the threaded part is the same amount shorter as the hex is longer, this means you wont find the thread of the moving nut behind the body with the Golf2 striker bolt.

For all interested in the shop details:
   Homepage: www.motomobil.com
The online shop is down at the moment, but you can order by phone in English.
Their shop part number for the black bezels with painted silver top: 60483010-4
Part description, german: Zierrahmen Türöffner innen schwarz mit silbernem Rand Escort 2
   Price: 9,40 € each

Again, i received the original parts NOS, i don't know if the reproduction parts look the same !!
If you (or they) are in doubt send them a copy of the picture above for confirmation !

I understood that if you order a reproduction part it will look like the chromed one which is a bit too short as pictured and discussed above.

Here we go again.
I received today the last online order i made for bezels or surrounds.

The final pair is out of a Escort MK2 and the same as the ones used on the MK IV, they just have a silver painted top surface.
   Ford # is 77AB-T226K23AA/AB

   Here the pics.

These are new old stock but reproductions are available online as well, just ask if they have the same design and shape.

If you want to order online i could copy a link to the products when interested.

O.K. final comparison of bezels fitting to the MK IV inside release handle housing. They all fit to the handel housing but are all different.

AC Autokraft MK IV, used on Ford Escort MK2, section cut is trapezium, surfaces are polished, clipped with 2 teeth behind the housing, inner length is 80mm, outer length is 96mm. Ford # is 77AB-T226K23AA/BA

Capri 1/2, Granada, Escort repro bezel chromed, section cut is a V, inner surface more angled, therefore the inner length is only 77 mm, outer lentgh is 93mm. This let the end of the lever sit on the inner surface after usage, so the chrome will come off in this area after a while, clipped with the 4 legs to the 4 ramps on the housing.

Capri 1/2 original bezel, section cut is trapezium, top surface has a groove which devides the bezel into 2 different grains, inner grain is polished, outer grain is rough, clipped with 2 teeth behind housing. Inner length is 80mm, outer length is 101mm. Ford # is M80GB-F22620 AA

The Capri 2 surround is pictured on the right  my pic above, they have a styling split line on top and show a stepped top surface with 2 different graines.

They fit on the MK IV but are NOT the same, so if you want to use them you need 2 for a conversion !

They  ar a bit longer as the MK IV because of the bi-grained top surface which is wider.

The MK IV surrounds are definitely from a Escort MK 2.

I will take some more detailed pics today to show the difference.

The door opener or inside release handle is used in different 80s Fords. I bought 2 new from a Ford Old Parts shop here in Germany online. The ones i ordered are from Capri MK II and definitely the same as on my MK IV, I compared both yesterday.

Worn out small parts i organized for the rework in the last 2 weeks:
2 door lock striker bolts original, 2 door striker bolts chromed, 2 door release levers chromed original parts, 2 chromed release lever bezels repros,  2 complete reworked, polished and chromed door lock mechanisms, polished stainless screws for the door locks, 2 door handles black with chromed brackets, reproduction parts.

Thanks for the input Gentlemen. The decission 'how to' was made last week.  The T-dash will go and a straight dash together with heater knobs, column switches and column cover from a later MK Iv will find place in the cockpit. Interior colour will be black or tan (beige), my prefered colour today is tan.
All the original parts will be stored for shure to have the possibility for a deconstruction to original specs.

   I'll keep you informed,

If you need the hood bows give Europasares a call or drive by to check if their bows will fit, if not it's not so much work to adapt them to your car. The bows can be bent and shortenend by hand easily, maybe you need a welder if you need to disassemble and weld in again the studs at the lower end of the bows.

A modification i id to some bows was removing the studs at the lower end of the bow tubes, cutting the hight, cut in some female thread and screw in a new stud with a male thread on the one and cylindrical on the other side. After this mods the bows are adjustable for hight what is needed sometimes to have the hood tensioned properly. But then it is not longer 'original'

The car has the T-dash, is green/green and in poor condition now. I will not turn it into a pseudo mk 3, just replace the dash by the straight one with the heater knobs. It is a longnose mk iv and i will keep the more modern look, the interior will be reworked completely but all the ugly details like heater knobs, interior light, headrests and harnesses will survive.

I like it this way, maybe the switches arround the column will go and give place for the original mk III beetle indicator lever.....don't know now.

   What is your opinion?

Here we go, starting from the left, the comparison of the mk iv, capri2 and capri3 surrounds

All fit to the mk iv inside release handle but have different cross sections.

Here you can see the little flat surface on top of the surround cross section on the Mk iv part where the capri one is more v- shaped.

I will post some pictures during my rebuilt but can bring up some showing the current status.

From far it looks not too bad...

Here is a comparison of the mk IV surround with the chromed capri2 and the capri 3 surround. The Capri 3 is longer and has a stepped surface. The capri 2 is slightly smaller and has a more defined V shaped profile. The MK IV has a small flattened surface and is not asolutely v-shaped as the capri 2.

Therefore in my opinion the surround itself is the same as the Escort mk2 as shown in Jon's pics.

I'm not able to post pictures, what's the trick behind ?
