All -

Thank you for your spirited responses to my post.  I know we all share in the Achilles heal that is the keyed axle.

Firstly, let me say that the various posts on the keyed axles served a very helpful purpose in showing everyone what can happen.  This is extremely helpful as we can then better understand what we are dealing with.  I suspect, like me, we are mostly visual learners, so many thanks for the postings, pictures and insight.

Now, I would be happy to post the pictures of the new axles so you could see their design...if I knew how.  At first glance, they are beautiful in their construction.  Robust in every way.  However, unlike the stock axles that have a threaded end with a castellated nut, they have a threaded core that then is held in the hub by a simple bolt and washer.

So, picture the male splined stub axle being inserted into the female hub and held in place by a bolt and washer.  No cotter pin or safety wire to hold it in place...just torqueing and Loctite. Not good.

What we have now done, is to create a thick washer that has "legs" that extend down into the splined end of the shaft thus preventing the washer from being able to rotate.  We have then created another fitted washer (with a hexagonal center milled out of it) that slips over the torqued bolt head and slides flush to the lower washer.  Both washers have also been pre-drilled and threaded to hold a 3/16 screw which when inserted now holds the the two washers tightly in place and thus prevents the bolt from rotating - that's the theory anyway.

So, now we have a mechanism that should hold the bolt on either side in place.  We will see as I am racing this weekend at Sears Point in Sonoma.

Again, I have pictures of the new axles to share and will also take pictures of the "fix" for you all to see and comment on.

If someone can help me figure out how to post those pictures, I would really appreciate it!

   More to come!

Thanks for all of the kind words about BE603.  She has been a blast to race.  Not too fun to drive on the road due to the track tuning, but she sure gets the looks!

The best part is when I park somewhere and someone walks up to me and asks me what she is.  Then, I tell them and watch the politeness take over when the complete lack of knowledge kicks in.  They usually will say "Oh yeah" or "Oh wow" etc.  Then I let them off the hook by saying "it's Ok, no one knows what it is".

My dream is to run her in the Mille Miglia - perhaps next year?

FYI - after Adrian owned and raced her, she was sold at auction to the famous vintage owner and racer Bruce McCaw who owned her for about 6 or so years.  He did the California Mille and the Colorado Grand before selling her to a chap in Monterey who also did the Cal Mille and a bit of track time.

We have a few more races this season, then I will put her to sleep for a few months while I sort out a few bits and bobs...

The smoking tire shot is entering turn 11 just before the front straight.  I had a great battle all weekend with the Lotus and a few others.  The bottom shot is indeed exiting the corkscrew.  Too much fun for any one man...but somehow I manage!  Can't wait until next year!

Ran 32F 34R and the car was better than ever.  Literally transformed how she handles.  Now will tweak and fine tune the best pressures, but clearly north of 30 is where these tyres/tires are happiest.

   Thanks for the great advice.

Superior weekend at the Pre-Reunion.  Great Weather. Incredible cars. My car performed the best it ever has.

Many thanks to the members for their advice on tyre/tire presures, it worked a charm!  The car came to life and was very balanced and speedy.

Looking forward to next weekend's events.

The purpose of using Nitrogen is not about leakage.  At least for racing purposes where the tires are subjected to strong heat fluctuations in a short period of time, Nitrogen has a much lower vapor content and thus is much less succeptable to pressure changes.  Period.  When your tire pressure changes as much as 1/2 PSI, your handling can change at the edges, not good.

Thank you John.  Stub axles supposedly arriving in the UK on Monday...will advise.

Thanks again to all for the feedback.

Firstly, the red rims are indeed 16 inch wheels. Any pictures you see with chrome wheels are 15 inch wheels.

Secondly, I have never tried going to higher pressures (30+ psi) to achieve better grip.  But maybe the stiffer sidewall will give me the firmness I have been lacking.  I will try, however I am very skeptical as my tires have approached 30PSI by the end of a session and they are usually very squirrely by then.

Thanks to a blown stub axle (again) I was a DNF in the Sonoma Historics so I am awaiting replacements with splined stubs to fix the problem once and for all.

Then I can play with different tyre pressures in anger.

   Stay tuned...Much thanks

I really like this idea...
For what it's worth, if we make it a west coast run around the time of Monterey, you could then drive up north towards San Francisco and I would be happy to host all of you at the Concours that I am proud to be Chairman of - The Hillsborough Concours.  The longest continually running Concours in the world...56 straight years.  There are older, but none have run continuously.  We run the weekend after Pebble Beach.

I will be racing my ACECA - BE-603 again in the Historics/Reunion this year.  Come see some sliding madness.

   Check us out at www.hillsboroughconcours.org

   Let's make this happen!

Hi John -

It was indeed good to meet you as well.  Nice to find another ACECA owner here in the Bay Area.  I think that takes the count to 6 or 7!

I have been in touch with Nigel and will advise.  The price seems to be a bit dear, but may be worth it in the long run.

   Stay tuned...

   See you at Monterey!

The picture with the red wheels above is using 16 inch rims...hence the sidewall flex.
I am currently running 15 inch stainless/chrome rims as shown in the picture at top.
I have played with the tyre pressures quite a bit.  Most recent experiment was to adjust from my usual 24psi for front and rear (cold) to 27psi front and 22 psi rear in order to try to offset my fairly strong oversteer.  It seemed to wrok rather well I must say.  Front tyres started to scrub a bit more so the back end was not as twitchy. Running 24 x 24psi was making my back end quite squirrely.  As you can see if you google "Aceca" and "Fisher" together and then click on images, you will find many pictures of me with a wide end slide.  Looks good in pics, but I can assure you, it's not the fast way round!
The key thing for me is to be able to justify using Michelin radials to the authorities if it is indeed "period correct" AND better for the car in terms of handling.  I did drive on radials last year due to a shortage in Dunlop supply.  The handling was much tighter, although at the edges, the radials had a nasty habit of snapping loose without warning.  Took some getting used to in comparison to the usually gentle and predictable non-radials.

Hi,

Could you please tell me where you got the "new" Aceca Axles?  I just blew up my second stub axle and the one's you have look like they are much more stout.

Are the a direct replacement for the stock originals?  They looks so.

   Please advise ASAP!

Thanks SO much for sharing this rebuild...Extremely helpful.

   Cheers,

I suppose I could.  But I am unfamiliar with the procedure...
