Moss Europe can supply the little gearbox which takes its drive from the back of a dynamo which has that facility. I know that Austin Healey Sprite and MG Midget were do equipped. I presume Moss will know which model the dynamo is.

Recent ACs / New Continuation Cobras

I thought the "Cobra" name was owned by Ford - or Shelby? Even when AC produced the cars for the home market in the mid 1960s they had to call them the AC 289 or 427. I understood AC never marketed a car in the UK called a Cobra. Is that correct? Some time ago I saw the names which had been registered in the UK by Lubenski and I don't recall the Cobra name being amongst them. Perhaps I am wrong. It would be good if any one can clarify his.

With reference to Nik Bagshaw's comment above on 6th October that I have deleted an earlier posting, I have not. I wouldn't know how to and I don't think one can once it's done. He is now posting on the wrong thread. The posting to which he refers was on a different thread.

I do have a direct comparison. The 185x16 Avons replaced 185x16 Pirelli Cinturatos not  only on my Aceca but also on my Ace at the same time. For me, both cars were vastly improved. When I got the Ace it was in appalling condition, but running. There were cracks from the sills going up the front of both rear arches. Also, the Pirellis just rubbed. When they were re-welded and re-beaded I asked for a subtle additional centimetre clearance. They no longer rubbed and only the odd trained eye has ever noticed. I realise is unlikely one would do that today.
   A friend recently replaced 600x16 Avons with185s on his XK120 and is ecstatic over the difference. I believe 185x16 Avons are only available via Vintage Tyres at Beaulieu under the original deal whereby Avon agreed to make them if Vintage Tyres paid for the mould.

The 185x16 Avons also have the same circumference as the 550x16 Michelin X so gearing is not affected. They have a wider footprint on the road and vastly improve the feel and handling of the car. They fill out the arches a bit, especially at the rear. However beware using them in an Ace because they may rub if the spring is tired. An Aceca rear spring has been used to prevent this by some users. Apparently oddly it seems but the circumference of the 185x16 Pirelli is a few centimetres more.

I have 185x16 Avons on my 2.6 Aceca RS 5500 and they are fine.

General Forum / A new monthly meeting ?

Quite frankly, is not this all (without wishing to offend anyone) a bit silly? Someone comes up with the very laudable idea of a new monthly meeting but instead of airing this via ACtion which is the Club's official means of communication to its members, puts it on the Forum and then is upset because of the poor response. The Forum is much inhabited by a peripheral fringe lurking on the sidelines who do not wish to subscribe financially to the Club's welfare and the services it offers but yet they may wish to obtain information from and use the Club's resources for their benefit or exchange views for free. I have been a member of the Club since 1968 and know a great many people, some of whom are close friends. Of all those I know, I am aware of only two people who look at the Forum. It is a totally false assumption that the Forum is the mainstay of the Club's way of broadcasting information to the Membership. If an idea for a new area meeting is to be suggested then the best means of reaching the Membership is via ACtion.

AC Weller Engine / Electronic ignition

Alastair Caldwell put me on to the Boyer Bransden system. It keeps the points but they no longer take heavy current. They are just a switching system but still should be set at the right gap. It is available in positive or negative earth versions. It can be fitted in minutes. In effect it is an amplifier. Alastair has this on all his cars and I guess he should know. I have fitted it to my Ace, Aceca, Greyhound and Morris 1000. It costs about £30.
   On positive Earth the capacitor should be disconnected. It comes with full and very easy instructions.
