Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca for sale in CA
« on: December 03, 2010, 03:48:15 »
It most likely was your car. As I recall it was red and possibly the owner lived in San Jose.

This was during a period when I owned RS5024 and commuted from Calaveras county to Sunnyvale by the shop in Livermore in a 912 Targa (long commute during the 1970's oil embargo but the Porsche got 40 mpg).

My presumption on the conversion was that it was done earlier but currently was running a 302 rather than the original 289.

Glad to hear of another long term owner. I wish I still had the 2.6.

I'm wondering if this is the same Aceca/Ford that I had a conversation with the owner at a shop in Livermore in about 1973. This shop seemed to do work on several AC's. The owner indicated that there had been some linkage to the development of the Cobra.

There is another highly modified Aceca/Ford in a collection near the Microsoft offices near Seattle.

Is Jim's 2.6 the red car shown at the Forest Grove Oregon concours a couple years ago? Anyone know which one it is?

The red car looks very nice.

I came across this site recently and was amazed at the volume of cars and photos he has collected  including mine from when I owned RS5024 in the 1970's which to my knowledge are not posted anywhere in the internet.

Is his assignment of numbers to cars correct?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ruddspeed?
« on: November 09, 2010, 02:12:05 »
Yes, the serial numbers are "RS", but I thought the true Ruddspeed versions had higher performance engine mods.

I owned RS5024 and with the webers it was very quick even though it was not a full stage 4 or 5.

The engine had the standard plain chrome valve cover rather than the Ruddspeed cover and so my presumption was that there was a difference.

I'm aware of the Ken Rudd history with AC and particularly the 2.6 versions.

I also have a copy of a 1961 magazine (Motor Trend???) with a short review of the first 2.6 (before the lowered/long nose). Compared to the companion road test of a Ace Bristol, they were quite impressed.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ruddspeed?

The John McLellan book on AC's that I have suggests the 2 liter's wheelbase is a full 2 ft longer and that the EL serial number would have been a pre-hydraulic brake car.

It appears that the chassis and suspension would require a complete upgrade/modification.

It is a pretty car but I wouldn't consider it to be the 38th of the series.

Question, are all 2.6 cars considered Ruddspeeds? I was of the impression that the Ruddspeed cars had additional mods to the engines (head work, carbs, etc.). My impression was that RS5024 was a standard 2.6 (presumably stage 1) with webers added???

General Forum / AC Bristol, or AC Ace Bristol?
« on: October 12, 2010, 19:24:40 »
I believe the distinction is that the Ace is the roadster and Acceca the coupe version.

Therefore an AC Ace Zephyr or Ace 2.6 represents the Zephyr engined roadster, AC Ace Bristol the Bristol engined roadster, etc.

Their US site is http://www.hurst-shifters.com/hurst-shifter/default.html

OR you could buy CSX2386 as shown in another posting.

Is this a fiberglass repro body on an early Ace chassis? The body looks wrong (no square lip on flairs, etc.) add in the Hurst shifter unusual interior and I'd question the authenticity.

The original early Cobras I found photos of had the ebrake next to the passenger seat rather than on the tunnel (which I believe is where Ace's were???).

Is this an AC or a Factory Five Racing replica?

Russo & Steele's auction results are online.

   Apparently BEX404 didn't sell. The price listed for BEX397 (the "Cobra-ised" ACE) is $110,000. The 289 MK1 Cobra CSX2461 went for $649,000.

There was a couple years ago another car numbered BEX404 (TSU 173) in the UK. It was though RHD, green/green with a black stripe across the front fenders.

Was it ever clarified as to the correct id for this car?

It appears that BEX404 has been sold annually at various auctions (Barrett Jackson at Scotsdale), Gooding at Monterey going for $258,ooo in 2009 and 264,000 in 2009.

Gus,
Great photos! Looks like you saw almost everything.  Any idea as to what BEX404 or BEX397 (converted to Ford 347 CI V8 w/webers) brought at the Russo and Steele sale?

428 Frua Forum / So what was the "A" in "CSX"?
« on: March 14, 2010, 03:09:01 »
I'm not sure the S = Shelby as the 2.6 engined cars carried the prefix RS and RSX and preceeded Shelbys. It possibly indicates the series having the small nose and the Zephyr engine allowed a lower profile.

The R would indicate Ken Rudd engineered I believe.

I believe the original style came from polo helmets. In addition to the shield the helmet in the photo has a visor.

There are a number of "novelty" helmet suppliers in the states who offer similar models for motorcycles.

   http://www.cycleheadgear.com/half-helmets

I believe this site has one with a small half shield attached.

Obviously while these are DOT approved for bikers they would be primarily for show for cars.
