New Correct Fuel Filler Cap
Had a meeting with Peter Killey (MD) and Chris a colleague at Ceandess Ltd. Wolverhampton, England.
The manufacturers of the original Fuel Filler Cap fitted to The AC Ace, Aceca, Greyhound and 260/289 Cobra.
They have agreed to manufacture a small run to the correct specification, if we can put together a block order for minumum dozen / twenty units.
I have arranged to take my Filler Cap off BEX333 and take it with me to the pre-arranged meeting next week on Thursday 14th July. Thereby we guarantee 100% authenticity prior to manufacture.
Budget price £45 / £50 each subject to Quantity ordered, ( P&P + vat Additional).
Will negotiate hard to reduce price on behalf of those interested in ordering.
Ceandess pronounced .. C & S... The internal seal anti-splash back unit that fits inside the filler cap is still available as a spare part, so those wishing to refurbish their old unit can do so.... £/$ ..[?]
I will confirm Price of this spare part next week.
In the meantime can anyone reading this thread please have words with other Ace, Aceca and Cobra MK1 owners and let me know of interest shown.
Will keep you all informed of progress..[;)]

I'll take one too, Keith, for my genuine, heritage, badged, real, not so real, replica, reproduction, and actually; pretty damn "smart car": RS 5038!!!
I'm hoping that with a NOS gas cap Shep will call it the genuine article!!
Thanks,
Gus

Thank you Keith, I'd like two

Keith, There is some interest from some folks over on the Club Cobra forum and there are a few people waiting to be approved on this forum so they can contact you directly. From the responses, it looks like there will be another 6 wanted, and an aditional person has asked me to up my order to 3 to cover one he wants. Hopefully this will not confuse things, and I will try and track those requests to make sure we do not have double requests. There was also a comment from one person who said he had contacted Ceandess in the past and they said they could not find the pattern for the proper button. Hopefully that is old news and they have found the correct button pattern. Thanks again for pulling this all together.AEX125 and 1078 are looking forward to have new correct gas caps.

You are correct C and S no longer have correct mould/pattern, that's why I'm taking a 1957 Ceandess/AC sample fuel filler cap with me next week, in order that we get 100% accuracy before committing to 1st batch order.
Great to hear that various Cobra and Ace guys in USA are showing a interest.
John Goose ( ACOC Greyhound Registrar) has contacted greyhound owners as each greyhound has two fillers we could get a few orders.
Nik has made contact with the 289 Guys ( Jerry Hawkridge Clan) so could well receive order from them.
Discussed project with Tony Michaels (ACOC Chairman) who indicates that the ACOC council will consider financing project, The idea being The ACOC finance the initial order inclusive of some club stock whilst those ordering units will pay deposit.
Have spoken to Terry Webb, ACtion Editor, to get amention in the next ACtion Magazine, as many ACOC members do not visit the Forum.
Ceandess Ltd have there annual shut down the last week of June so we have a little time to put together order and negotiate price.
Jay, Could I suggest you collate the order/s for club members in USA or could you speak to Ron Leonard and sound him out for ordering a batch ..[?] from ACOC UK. Could save money as minimum transactions hence less bank charges. Especially with exchange rate of $/£.. .. Just a idea.. .. Your Views..[?]
The response is positive, Hopefully we order sensible quantity which in turn will result in lower price.
Cheers for Now

Hi Keith,
Put me down for a cap, I picked up an ACE kit from Jerry yesterday and mentioned these caps, Jerry said he would be interested in several if they are the real deal. Member of 289 register.

Tony Sheppard order for 1 acknowledged.. Subject to being 100% authentic/correct.
Running total as midday 10th July.... 16 Caps.

Keith,
I can at a minimum coordinate the initial requests from this side and will send you a separate e-mail with names a and requests. I will have to think about handling of the monetary coordination, but we can deal with that when we get there. I have not had a chance to call Ron Leonard but will try and do that on Monday.
Jay
-
Thank you Jay for your positive response.
Received the following from Jay, to complement earlier post.
Keith,As requested here is a list of the folks at the Cobra Club Forum that are interested in the gas caps.
Larry 1
Bill E 1
Karl 2
Jeff 2
Bill S 1
Jay Peterson 2
As I am sure you are aware the interest is in caps with correct buttons and so if Ceandess cannot make the keyhole button, then most (if not all) on the above list will not be interested.
Thanks,
Jay..[;)]
Jay
If Ceandess cannot produce 100% correct unit we will not proceed as it defeats the whole exercise.
As interest continues and potential order grows we have more strength to secure our objective, That of getting the original manufacturer to reproduce exact copy.
Please have word around with ACOC Members and enthusiasts alike and I will do my best on Thursday.
Running Order as 15.45 Sunday 10th July.... 17 Caps
Cheers for Now.

Jay
Thank you for Agreeing to collate those interested parties in USA,
Two More Orders from the other side of the Pond.
Keith,
There have been 2 more requests,
Nick Acton . .... 2
John O ...... 1
Additionally, Nick is the guy who had been trying to get the caps made here in the US, and he has offered some drawings he has of the circular button if it would help in the fab at Ceandess.
Jay
Running total as of 07.05 Monday 11th July ... 20 Caps
Regards Nicks offer to supply detailed drawing of keyhole shaped push button, Would appreciate copy via email, could help when negotiating pricing on Thursday.
Thank you ( and Nick ) for your support .. .. Appreciated..[;)]
Keith..[:)]..[:)]
-
Keith,
My friend Ron wants 2 and he is checking with Dave Wagner, who might need some as well.
Gus
-
Hey Keith, did you negotiate a commission for each unit sold?! LOL.
Can`t believe with all this interest that Ceandess didn`t retool years ago!
If there was any doubting the value of our (beloved [;)]) forum, this project alone should redress that. KL, Bloody Well Done!
-
Peter
Thank you for your email / order.
Peter Kelb ... .... .... 1 Cap
Running total as of 17.46 Monday 11th July .. .. 23 caps
Numerous phone calls with more potential orders. So should be able
to negotiate lower price at Thursday meeting.
Hi Keith. Don`t suppose you could send a photo or 2 of your cap so I can post on the 289 site what an original should look like?
I`m pretty sure Dad`s Greyhound has later-style caps fitted, but whether they are original or not I couldn`t say.
Cheers,
Nik.
Photo or two will be posted this evening. (Copies sent to Nik )
Nik... No I didn't build in any commission, In fact I don't even need one myself ... One day I might need something for BEX333 and someone will help me .. Proves The Club Forum can produce results.. Let's hope other items can be sourced . e.g Over riders ..[?]
But thats for someone else..[;)]

On the originals, the seals were riveted in, but the later versions are screwed together, so I suggested that the 'new original' is made that way too, not only to reduce re-tooling/extra manufacturing operation & the associated costs, but to ease maintenance as well.

Nik,
FWIW, If the cap that you pictured on the black car is the actual sample that will be used, you will have a problem with detail. That one appears to have been re-plated and has lost a lot of detail.
The interior gasket section design of that cap is not correct either.
Jim
-
Jim & All interested parties
Thank you for your observation....
Rest assured, my cap is not being used to produce the mould.
Ceandess have the tooling for the correct shape, size etc but not the release button, The cap off Tims car will be used to confirm correct keyhole shape release and a new Mould will be made.
Regards the Seal/ Anti splashback secured under the cap, this unit is no longer secured in place by a rivet, therefor can be replaced as and when required. Please note the material and size of washer & Seal has changed a few times during the past 50 years of manufacture.
When taking the pictures of my cap via my Blackberry, the throwback of light / reflection distorts the crispness of detail.
(this cap has never been rechromed, definitely not since 1964, polished maybe. Hence loss of definition/detail...[;)]
The seal was replaced approx 1985 when BEX333 was resprayed Black.
Will post a Picture of correct seal later today...[;)]

Received the following email order this evening:-
Dear Keith,
I'm told there is a possibility that correct Cobra/Ace fuel filler caps could be made as a small production run by Ceandess.
I'm a member of both the ACOC (memb no. 4318) and The 289 Register - I understand the price may be around £50 each.
Please would you put me down for 3 caps, up to a maximum cost of £250 for the three?
Any problems, further information, deposit requirements, payment instructions etc - please contact me on rsk@ac289.com rs.k@virgin.net
or 01480 468775
Many thanks,

Message to all those who have placed order/s.
Positive Meeting with Peter Killey MD of Ceandess Thursday Morning 14th July.
Re-assured that Ceandess can make new mould to guarantee 100% correct Fuel Filler Cap specification with keyhole shape release button.
Chris to prepare quotation for minimum of 100 units.
2 -options to be priced & evaluated with regards the keyhole shaped release button.
The main cap will be die cast fettled then chrome plated and the keyhole shape release button either diecast or machined from solid and chrome plated.
Too evaluate which is best for both value and longevity, price should be confirmed 1st week of August, delay due to Annual shut down of Ceandess works last week of July.
Discussed the fixing of the Seal/ Anti-splash back unit secured to underside of each cap, The original was rivetted, however these cannot be replaced resulting in replaceing with a new cap in years to come.
Have therefore decided to keep cost down by having a non rivetted standard seal unit fitted, This seal arrangement can be removed / replaced any time ....with a standard off the shelf Ceandess seal unit.
Conclusion:-Good constructive meeting with positve results regards
both specification and potential reduction in price.[;)]
Will keep every one informed ... Thank you all for your order/s, interest and support .. we can achieve our goal.
Cheers for Now.

Still it would be nice to have an original looking spare at hand.

Received following order from Art Cleveland:-
Keith
I've been away, so tonight is the first I've seen of your meetingf bwith Ceandess.
Congratualtions to you, The response to your announcement is certainly not unexpected. I recall asking Brian Eacott about 15 years ago and he couldn't understand why they didn't run off a supply. THe plating on the pot metal on all the caps of course deterioates in time and Brian said rerplating was not feasable.
If Ceandess will produce a cap that is the correct design, with quality plating, I'll start with an order for 5.

Richard & Jay...
Stepping in to offer assistance to Richards initial thread on 29th May and Jays response of 30th May, Who would have thought so many of our AC colleagues worldwide would have responded in such a positive manner.
I simply thought my assistance on this side of the pond would have resulted in orders for a dozen or twenty fuel filler caps, instead we are now over One Hundred and Forty (140) units. for destinations in England, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland and Austria.
Thank you Richard and Jay, it has proved both a education and experience, I do enjoy a challenge and will continue to see it through to the end.
As stated earlier, The Impossible I can do, Miracles take a bit Longer........[;)].
Will keep you all informed of developments. Keep them orders coming in... ...
Last but not least, It proves the ACOC Forum works to / for the benifit of AC Owners, ACOC Members and Enthusiasts alike.

Latest Update reference Manufacturing of Our Period Fuel Caps.
Received the following email from Chris at Ceandess :-
Good afternoon Keith,
I thought I’d better give you an update on the filler cap so far.
I have so far spent approx. two day fettling an existing cap. The rib across the centre of the cap is dimensionally correct to the original now. It is far more defined than on our current production caps.
Much of my time has been taken up attempting to reproduce the keyhole shape. I have filled the existing rectangular slot with body filler and then proceeded to file/scrape/mill/linish/sand/grind the filler until the keyhole shape is close the AC original. This is unfortunately very time consuming as it is easy to remove too much filler and end up having to start almost from scratch which of course means re-filling the hole , waiting for it to harden and then continuing.
I apologise if I seem to be dragging my feet somewhat with it but it is a very high priority for myself and the company to get this master sample correct. As you know, any error in this master will be re-produced in aluminium by the casting company so I believe the extra time is well spent to get it right.
Once I’m happy with the master I’ll get a price from the casting company to add into our quoting program. I’ll also need you to approve the master.
I hope this is all satisfactory.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman

Keith,
Is aluminum the best option for the button that will chrome plated?
Just asking...
-
A Snake.
Ceandess have been asked to price the cap with couple of options reference the keyhole shaped release, ( Cast or solid billet) in order that we can maximize longevity, have also requested that they subject to approval manufacture some spare releases.
Ceandess have original components to measure and use as pattern, rest assured the new units will be superior material to the old Mazak of the 1950s, which like Dinky Toys of the 1930s /1950s expands with age and eventually turns to dust, plus a real bugger to rechrome.
Watch this space.
Keith..[:)]..[:)]
-
Keith, not sure what their manufacturing process involves, or what they have already - I have a badly-pitted but entirely non-messed about with cap and keyhole release that I would be prepared to loan if this would help.
Can't see aluminium being strong enough in such a small section for the pushbutton release, but I'm sure they know what they're doing.
Roger King
-
.
Roger.
Thank you for your generous Offer, However Tim Isles loaned me the original cap from BEX313 and I supplied that as a sample.
Unfortunately Ceandess didn't keep the original tooling and are therefor making new tooling, I requested more fettling as the chromeplating would significantly soften the definition, proprtions and shape.
Have no fear, the finished article will be fit for purpose and be 100% correct in profile and shape.
Plus will be in better quality material than those produced some
fifty plus years ago.

Keith,
While delivery of the new authentic Ceandess fuel caps will be after this year's National Day Concours, for future year's competitions it would be most interesting to know the number of points the Club's judges will deducted for non-original caps in the Ace, Aceca, Greyhound and Cobra classes. From the above outpouring of reservations you've received, it's obvious that many knowledgeable owners understand and appreciate the intrinsic value of maintaining the originality of their AC's. Square button caps are for replicas and motorcycles.

So could you please put me down as an interested party for
2 caps. As mentioned the diameter of my present fuel fillers are 2.75" and they simply screw onto the neck which connects inot the tube which goes into the petrol tank. I will await details to find out if the "new" fillers are suitable.

Hi to you all........... Thank you for being patient..[;)]
Quick update, Progress is slow, But we have progress.
received the following email upon my return from Business trip to Bologna & Modena.
Good afternoon Keith,
I have now had word back from the casting company regarding these caps and latches.
They are saying that for larger quantities they would need multiple patterns producing. I’ve phoned them to clarify what is classed as a larger quantity but it seems the man I need to speak to is on holiday until Monday.
I suppose when I first discussed it with them we were talking about 20off but as time has progressed it’s turned into 200off.
They are going to get a rough quote from a pattern makers for the multiple patterns and let me know.
I’m afraid I can’t estimate the cost of a pattern but let’s say it could add £20-£30 per part onto the price. I shall keep you updated with any information I gain.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman
Quality Engineer.

.
Hopefully by end of next week we have positive movement and I can view a finished casting prior to chrome plating, then confirm pricing (inc p&p plus vat) and arrangements for payment in the most economic way irrespective of Country & currency. (Orders from 10 Countries).
Cheers for Now..

Gerry has sourced a 69mm by 9mm Grommit which could be used as a Body Seal under the cap base / filler tube.(not 100% correct)
All those who pay before the end of November will receive one with their cap free of charge.
Last but not least, it has been brought to my attention that owners of 260 and early 289 Cobras may wish to fit just the cap and not the complete assembly, the roller pin can be removed and the new cap used as direct replacement.. The complete unit will be supplied so one has the choice of how they wish to fit replacement unit.
Thank you once again to those who have already paid and a small nudge and prod to those who have yet to pay by credit card or Cheque (In £s Sterling)
Cheers for Now
Keith and Gerry

Any news at the fuel filler cap front?

Migge
Latest on Fuel Filler Caps, Order Placed with Ceandess for Correct Fuel Filler Caps, Have query with Ceandess regards the Base and Tube as it appears different to the screw threaded unit fitted by AC, the Cap and Keyhole shaped Release plus roll pin are 100% correct.
So New cap fits straight onto existing origonal base without disturbing and removing main body from Car.
Arranging meeting for later this month when I can take complete assembly to Ceandess and discuss & compare base fitting.
To date we have received payment for approx 140 units.
Keep you all posted.

As far as I understood these filler caps are made of special aluminium which will explode with a big bang when someone try to mount them on a GRP body [:o)]

I know Peter,
That's why my 2 fuel filler caps are not supposed to go on a GRP body anyway.

KEITH,
Credit card information to pay for our 19 caps has been forwarded to your personal e-mail address today.

Thank you for confirming your Credit Card Details, Will download when I get home.
I take this opotunity to Answer a few questions.......
Individuals in EU are subject to vat, bonifide trade are exempt along with all export outside EU.
USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada etc are Zero rated.
Fuel Filler Caps will be available in 8 to 10 working weeks.
They are accurate and should fit directly onto existing AC Base with the new roller pin (Supplied) Those with non standard base, can fit the whole assembly.
For the early Cobra Boys who have a bugger of a job due to lack of access space to/for the filler & base assembly, behind the rear bulkhead and rear scuttle. Easier for them to just fit The New Cap unit.
Hopefully I have catered for all permutations..[;)]
Cheers for Now and a Big Thank You to all of you in supporting this venture.
Will keep you all posted of developments.

Latest Update 1st December 2011
Collected a original Base Filler from Tim Pearce off his Ace Bristol and also inspected the Fuel filler and location his 1964 Cobra. Then took base assembly to Ceandess for meeting on Wednesday, after carefull inspection and measuring plus refering to pre 65 drawings Ceandess confirm they can supply the base with correct screw thread to match that originally supplied back in the 1950s/1960s.
Therefore all those ACs still fitted with correct original filler base can now be fitted with either the new cap as direct replacement or the cap and screw threaded base as a complete unit, which ever is easier and suitable.
Having now seen the fitting in/on a Cobra and the lack of access and space above the tank & under the rear scuttle. I appreciate their frustration and lack of enthusiasm in taking out their petrol tank.
This should really help the COBRA Boys.[;)].
Oh. It's so much simpler with the Ace, Aceca & Greyhound.
Cheers for Now ............. We can see light at the end of the tunnel. ....Phewwww [;)].

Hi to All who have ordered Fuel Filler Caps
Making special visit to Candess this week to chase up progress of manufacturing and inspect quality of our order for the Fuel Filler Caps.
Order placed in December once we had majority of payments in as Ceandess required large deposit with order prior to manufacture.then balance upon collection.
Quoted 8 to 10 working weeks to supply from receipt of offficial order and deposit.
Once I have collected all units, All orders will be processed and dispatched as qickly as possible. ..... Sorry for the long lead time, But as you all appreciate this project grew so fast it had to be self financing, Gerry & I simply could not afford to buy 200 units on the off chance everyone would follow through.
Rest Assured Goods should be despatched late February.
Thank you for your patience and support.

Latest Update...23rd February 2012.
Just received the following email:-
Good morning Keith,
There has been a delay in the production of the pattern at the casting company.
The first samples that were produced had some dimensional issues which had to be address.
I have had the first off samples from the adjusted pattern this morning which I need to show to the polishing company prior to giving the OK to the casters. Production on the castings should begin early next week.
Sorry for this delay but I’m afraid these hold ups are inevitable on a new part.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman

I have communicated with many of you via email or phone, Thank you for your patience...
Once I have collected finished items Gerry & I will arrange immediate despatch, In the meantime.
Sorry for delay, Better we get accuracy and quality..[;)]

Latest Update from Ceandess
Received the following email from Chris Smallman
Good afternoon Keith,
Just a quick update on the caps to keep you in the loop.
We have received first off samples of the caps cast in zinc. These were sent for polishing but this unfortunately revealed blow holes and pit marks in the casting. I’ve returned the samples to the casters for them to deal with the issue. They seem to think that it may be down to sand in the casting or turbulence of the escaping gases during the casting process.
I’ve attached a couple of photos of the sample zinc cap and as you can see the polisher has tried to polish out the pit marks so much so that the definition of the rib has been lost. We, the casters and the polishers are aware that this definition is very important to the final product. You can also see in the other photo the largest blow hole. Along either side of the rib there are a series of pin holes. I must also apologise for the terrible photos. It’s not easy taking close up shots of such a shiny surface!
The original sample was cast in aluminium and gave a much better finish straight from the casting process. I have sent this aluminium sample to be polished to see how it comes out and I am looking into how realistic it is to have aluminium chrome plated. From my initial findings I have found that it is indeed possible but is usually polished to a high shine rather than chromed.
I know this is starting to drag on but we are at (one of) the most important stages of the project and it is imperative to solve this problem before going on. I’m sure your customers would agree that it is very important to get the product right.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman

To all ACOC Members who are patiently waiting to receive thier Fuel Filler Cap/s,
Sorry for the delay,It is out of my control[:(].
Rest assured the wait will be worth it.
As you can appreciate Chris of Ceandess is looking after our interests in getting every thing spot on and to the standard we expect..[;)].
Can you please pass on latest to other members who may not frequently visit our Forum.

I don't understand why they are having to consider a different material - Ceandess still make and sell the later style cap with the square button, which shouldn't be any more difficult to make - can't they use the same techniques with a new pattern, or is there something I'm missing here? Wouldn't be the first time!
-
I believe they Pressure Die Cast the normal caps, these it would seem are sand cast, this can potentially have these type of defects in the casting if the runners & risers are not correct, it might be better to have them made in brass/bronze if you want to chrome plate them.
The other problem with sand cast parts is finishing, it would be better to Investment Cast them but there is still some hand finishing needed!
Robin
-
Also, the standard square-button caps have a greater radius on the rib edges, which is where the problems seem to manifest themselves on the period correct sharper edges. I`m sure they will resolve the issue soon & perfection will be attained!

Bueller?, Bueller?

Hi
Have confirmation from Ceandess that problems have been overcome and manufacturing has started.
I will arrange to inspect each unit before accepting them, Hopefully within the next few weeks, Then immediate despatch to all corners of the Globe.
If I had realised the amount of time and effort involved I would never have taken up the gauntlet and run with this blooming project.[:(]
(Out of my comfort zone when I am reliant / dependant on others, prefer to be in full control)
Rest assured, we are getting there. ..[;)]
Thank you all for your patience.[:)]
Cheers for Now....

Keith,
I for one am very glad that you took up the gauntlet. While it may seem to many that this has been a VERY long process it is actually quite typical for this type of work. It is far more important to get it right than to get it quickly.
Many Thanks
Pete

I absolutely agree - I have had to use a square-buttoned cap for the last 6 years, what's a few weeks wait for the right thing? The quality of a classic car restoration lies entirely in the detail...
Thanks, Keith

Latest Update... 9th May 2012
Good News & Bad News........ the light at the end of the tunnel, is / was a bloody train not daylight.
Further to my latest exchange of phone calls, I made a visit to CEANDESS this morning and had meeting with Chris Smallman. (Quality Control).
Good News..[;)]
The Fuel Filler Cap castings have been cast and are in process of being polished in readiness for chrome plating... I took a picture of a couple of rough / raw cast units and three which had been tested for chrome plating, ( note, these units were only lightly polished and not pre drilled, but just tested for chroming) Picture from my Black berry to follow.
The Bad News..[:(]
The Lad..[?] Tasked with linishing the key hole shaped latches, Ruined not one but every bloody one, ( Consistant or what !! ).
So a complete new batch have to be made, copy of letter and explanation from Chris Smallman ( CEANDESS ):- as below:-
Good morning Keith,
Following your recent visit, here is a status update on the AC caps.
Please take a look at the attached latch photographs. As you can see they are certainly not up to standard and have now caused yet another delay. I have spoken to the casting company regarding this.
Apparently, what can only be referred to as damage, has been caused during the linishing operation. Following the casting of the parts a certain amount of flash would have been present. This would have then been Linished off on a belt sander type machine. It would appear that the job has been giving to an over enthusiastic employee who has just Linished them too much. Most notable issues are as follows-
• Large indentations from linishing on top face.
• Flats on the ‘thumb diameter’ from linishing.
• Several with flash/slag (?) inside the hook part of the latch.
• Linished out of square.
• Excessive linishing on the top face leaving a feather edge around the ‘thumb diameter’
The casters are very embarrassed and apologetic with regards to this and have come up with a high quality but time consuming method to produce the latches. Usually casting boxes are packed with a ratio of reclaimed casting sand to new sand. Using new sand alone is very difficult but they have a man who is very skilled in this art who will work continually on this batch until the full quantity is produced. Unfortunately he can only produce approx 60off latches per week! So we could be looking at 3 week production on these.
The cap castings have been received and are in a suitable state to begin the production run (drilling prior to polishing). These should be completed tomorrow ready for sending for polishing.
I can only apologies for these continued delays resulting in this long drawn out saga. I hope you can bear with us.
Personally I cannot wait to have the completed batch ready for despatch so I can return to a full night’s sleep!
Best Regards
Chris Smallman
Quality Engineer
Likewise..... I too wish to get a proper nights sleep, What started as a goodwill gesture in helping two Club Members in USA, snowballed and has now become a Avalanche!!
Seriously, Gerry & I would like to thank all who are patiently waiting and request they please hold on for a few more weeks, We will get the quality finished product and Chris, Gerry & I get a good nights sleep.
Keep you all posted , In the meantime I will get a few photos on line to complement this latest posting.
Cheers for Now

OK, let`s start with the good news!
Here`s a selection of pre-production caps, in raw-metal and chromed, but not given final polish as they were solely to approve the plating process:

And now the results of the poor linishing technique: [:(]

Fishing weights, anyone? [xx(]

What a shame. I would guess that the linishing lad is now the tea-boy and sweeper-upper!
-
This is all down to supervision & proper instruction, do not blame the hired hand!
-
I have no clue about the costs, but in these days ( and maybe 25 years ago)parts like this are may cheaper by CNC machines done. Once the program is written, you just need a block af alloy to get it done and every single one has the same quality. You just need a very good sample and it will be meassured by a laser as I know and all the important ankles, curves etc. will get into the program and then you can dubplicate as many as you want. Of course they need sanding, polishing, chromeing.
Just my 2 pence or how is it said?
-
Keith, To echo what others have said, even though this has taken much time, thank you very much for taking this on. It is very much appreciated.

Welcome to the world of manufacturing! We have a pump manufacturing business and have all the skills in-house, R&D, CAD, Tool Room, CNC Machines, Plastic Injection Moulding, Assembly, Testing etc etc. We still have to buy in raw materials both metals and plastic, bearings, motors and elecrtic/ electronic components. It is frightening that we often have to go in to our suppliers to sort out their quality and production problems. The practical hands-on engineering knowledge is disappearing and the new intake of graduate managers often don't have a clue! What will happen in another 20 years when current 50 somethings have retired, I don't know. Keith you are doing a great job, and it is a shame about the temporary setback. Andy.

LATEST NEWS .
Thursday 21st June 2012
Just when I thought we had made serious progress and were on the home run !!.
I receive the following email:-
Good morning Keith,
I’ve just returned to work following a week’s holiday to find some major issues regarding the fuel caps.
The polishing company phoned early last week to alert us to the fact that there were several of the caps showing large blow holes/pit marks in the surface that chroming would not cover. The casting company were made aware of this problem and they set about producing replacements immediately.
The rest of the batch of caps were sent to the chroming company. As you know from previous trials the caps were showing small pit marks following polishing but the chrome covered these. The chrome hasn’t been able to cover these marks on the balance of this batch. Regrettable these caps and latches are not fit for purpose so we will have to start production from scratch.
It is now very obvious to me that sand casting is not the correct method of production for these caps. When I originally visited the casting company to ask their opinion on the production method they said there would be no problem. As they are the ‘experts’ on the subject I assumed they knew their trade and would be able to produce a satisfactory part.
We are fully aware that this batch must be produced for you so we are in discussions with a die-casting firm to see if tooling can be produced. Matt Davies visited the die-casters on Thursday so I’ll speak to them this afternoon to see how it is progressing. I doubt they will have a final price yet but this is likely to be the best route to go down so we will probably give the go-ahead to produce the tooling once all the dimensions are confirmed.
This will obviously be quite an expense for Ceandess so , in the end, this order will represent a considerable loss for the company. I can only apologise for these continued problems which mostly seem to fall at the feet of the casting company.
I hope your customers can appreciate that we are doing all we can to produce a satisfactory product for them.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman

ACOC Members...
Ceandess are being very professional and honouring our contract, We will eventually receive a 100% correct and top quality fuel cap at no additional cost. It is just going to take a bit longer.
Thank you for being so patient and understanding, Jerry & I can assure you we will win, if we had known the task involved we would not have run with the project, Too many hours of lost sleep and given up recording time spent visiting Ceandess Factory and answering phone calls and emails ....[:(]..[:(][:(]

I greatly value the brave decision to start all this, and offer my wholehearted support to you for continuing to see it through. Not easy, I'm sure - but speaking personally I'm extremely grateful!

Die Casting tooling is very expensive, particularly for such a small production run, i see no reason why these cannot be investment cast & in fact i would cast them in Brass/Bronze, i had some parts (batch of ten) cast by an Art Metal Foundry who specialise in fine castings, this is not expensive in tooling terms & the castings will require less hand finishing, in addition if defect do exist they can be gas welded etc.

Hi & welcome, Nick, another ClubCobra regular.
So how have you done these? Cast, Extrusion or CNC`ed? You obviously didn`t let the apprentice polish them!
-
They are CNC'd from aircraft aluminum, copper and then chrome plated. The originals were getting eaten up in the chrome platers tanks whilst prepping for chrome.

Very nice!

LATEST UPDATE ..... 29th AIUGUST 2012
Made a personal visit to CEANDESS before ACOC National Day.[;)]
Collected a couple of Rough Sandcast caps, a couple semi polished and fully polished items plus 2 Chromed Caps... ALL REJECTED as poor quality.
CEANDESS are now producing our batch by DIECAST method and are in process of making the Die.
All the sample units taken to ACOC National Day and shown to many members who approached me asking for update, All agreed that the Die Cast version shown is 100% better and worth waitng another month or two in order to get correct satisfactory caps.
Most members now know the difference in Quality (Finish) between Sand Cast and Die Cast and can talk with some authority...[;)]
The last letter explaining situation from CEANDESS was posted on the Forum and also printed in ACtion July 2012 (Vol38 No 3) See Letters
page14.
If I had known the hassle and personal cost in time and money, I would never have volunteered to pick up the gauntlet and run with it.
Rest assured I do not give up, CEANDESS are honouring contract at their own cost and vast loss forfill contract.
WE will have correct finished goods within next few months..[;)]
Cheers for Now.

I have a non-standard cap, but its filler hose is the same size as standard (60m internal diameter) and I had a lot of fun and games earlier this year trying to source a suitable hose. Standard sizes now are 57mm or 63mm, and because the material is reinforced, it cannot be compressed or stretched to make it fit. You have to get the right size.
Mk2 Cortinas used the same size, but only a short length; I contacted the guy who makes the hoses and he made up new tooling (at my expense!) to produce longer sections, up to 14 inches. I understand from David Sanderson that no Ace/Aceca/Cobra variant needs longer than that. He sells you a full 14 inch length and you cut it to suit your car.
So if you want a new hose to go with your new cap, talk to Alan at:

Phone: 01525 382953
Usual disclaimer.

Correction to my post about fuel hose: the correct size for an Ace/Aceca/Cobra is of course 60mm internal diameter, not 60m. That would be rather large!
-
My hope was that the self gifted present of a new, correct gas cap for my Cobra would arrive in time to celebrate my January 2012 birthday. So much for that. What are the odds for my 2013 B-day? Anyone?
-
Roland..
The saga of the Fuel Filler Caps has been on going for a Year Now, Sorry we missed your Birthday and almost certainly will miss your forthcoming Birthday.
I have constantly kept everyone informed on the Forum and in ACtion Magazine.
The quality of the sand castings were not acceptable and were rejected, Ceandess have dissasembled their Die cast and are having it modified so as to produce die cast to our correct dimensions with correct key hole release etc.
My last visit was earlioer this month and all going well samples should be available 3rd week of November..[;)]
I am sorry for the delay, but every one who has contacted me over the past year and all those who saw samples of Fuel Caps both raw sand cast,m polished, chromed and comparted to sample Die Cast agree that we will only accept quality product and have backed me in following this exercise through.
Once consignment has been manufactured , examined and accepted the caps will be distributed promptly.
Please rest assured every one who has placed order/s and paid in advance will definitely receive their Fuel Filler Cap/s, We are nearly there, just a little more Patience.

LATEST UPDATE.......8th December 2012..[:(]...[:(]...[:(!]
The Continuing Saga of "The elusive CEANDESS Fuel Filler Caps"
Good afternoon Keith,
I felt that I should forward you an update of the long and winding story regarding the AC fuel filler cap.
Following the failings of the sand castings method we have moved onto to having the caps produced using pressure diecasting. We have a tool in existence which produce the same cap but with a square section trigger latch. It seemed a fairly straight forward operation to rework this tool so it had an interchangeable insert that would allow it to produce the square section trigger and keyhole shaped trigger that you require.
This work was carried out at what we deemed to be a reasonable cost but during testing to produce new samples the tooling split into three piece. It was agreed that a hairline crack had been present in the tooling for some time but had gone unnoticed. When the alteration was carried out it had sufficiently weakened the crack to an extent where it failed completely during use.
This was obviously a disaster for us as we no longer had tooling to produce your AC caps or our existing caps which have scheduled orders of several thousand..
We have therefore been left with no choice but to have the tool remanufactured from scratch at a vastly increased cost to ourselves. This tool manufacturing time has obviously added to the already very late caps that you require. We expect the tooling to be completed sometime around mid-February and hopefully we can proceed without further mishap.
I can only continue to apologise to you and your customers for the great inconveniences cause by these continued delays. Let’s hope that the new year brings some better fortune to this order.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman
Quality Engineer.

In the meantime I would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding, it really is appreciated.
I now know why very few members volunteer to undertake these projects,.[;)] Seriously, I will carefully weigh up long term repercussions before jumping in with both feet for another project.
Rest assured, We will secure our order and goods will be distributed some time this year.... Not giving a date at present..[;)] In the meantime..

The Fuel Filler Cap SAGA is starting 2013 on a more positive note..[;)]
I don't want to tempt fate, But have just received the following email from Chris Smallman of CEANDESS
.
Good Afternoon Keith,
A quick update on progress..
The diecast tooling for the trigger has been completed and is now in the possession of the casting company (photographs attached). They have informed me that sampling will take place tomorrow or Friday.
The tool makers have informed the casters that they will receive the tooling for the cap mid-next-week and sampling should take place shortly after this.
Following this there will be a short delay whilst we build-up a cap complete using the first off samples to ensure all is well. If no alterations are required then production at the casters can begin.
Let’s just say we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Best Regards

Thursday 14th February 2013.
Called in to Ceandess for progress report, Chris Smallman not in office so had meeting with Matt Davies (MD). requested he furnish us with written report. Please find response attached:
Hi Keith,
Thanks for popping by yesterday and your support in this project (the end is in sight, I promise).
I have just spoken to BSC and all is progressing, We are expecting the triggers in to day / Monday for comparison against drawing and approval. They believe the trigger is right and fits into our sample The top plate of the cap tool is in their tool room for final assembly and will produce some sample parts next week.
These will have to be polished and we will look to assemble one at this point. Following the sign off we will produce the batch. I have included the current order details below. Which shows we are currently short the caps and one base.
I would propose that following the sign off we would just review the order to ensure we produce enough in the first batch so that we don’t end up at looking at having to make another immediately after the first. That said, we’ll the get the cap signed off first..
Kind Regards
Matt Davies

Tuesday 12th March 2013. Latest Update from CEANDESS..[:)]..[:)]..[:)]
Good afternoon Keith,
Good lord, we are getting close now!
Attached is a photograph of a sample trigger and cap fully assembled with all internal components and fitted to a filler neck.
There was one small issue to rectify on the diecast tooling before they can produce the batch. The rear of the trigger fouls ever so slightly on the bottom
back edge of the recess and won’t allow the cap to undo easily. The tool maker has to add a little material to the die to solve this problem.
The cap in the photograph has only been polished, not chromed, but it still looks rather good I think.
Best Regards
Chris Smallman

Latest:- Saturday 13th April 2013.
Inspected first polished die cast Fuel Filler Cap earlier this week, Great finish, however requested CEANDESS make very small adjustment to Die so key hole shaped trigger/release sits flush with body of cap when chrome plated. (preproduction unit a little to tight).
Should view a pre production chromed unit later this month, Then we can proceed with manufacture...[|)]..[|)]..[|)]..[|)].

I believe the correct size to be 2 3/8inch I/D, which is 60.3mm in new money. The AC 3000ME uses the same size - with two lengths each of about 10 inch.
It proved to be a difficult size to source. I obtained mine from Spencer Lane Jones in Warminster, who was restoring an Aceca at the time.
It is important to ensure the material is compatible with modern fuels.
Keith - any chance you could source some new hose of this I/D so that everyone can connect their new filler caps to their fuel tanks?

Now that the new caps are finally available, I remind members about my posts on this thread of September last year, about new fuel filler hoses. These are now available.

HERE THEY ARE!!!!Now with Gerry Hawkridge at Hawk Cars, the filler caps available in 3 variants: Threaded neck, straight tube & cap on it`s own:
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q113/nikbj68/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSHawkvariants2_zpsabe1a1e3.jpg) (http://"http://s134.photobucket.com/user/nikbj68/media/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSHawkvariants2_zpsabe1a1e3.jpg.html")

Bravo to Keith, what an immense project this turned into!
Also well done to all at Ceandess for battling on to get these right, and don`t they look the business!
Chris at Ceandess provided some archive 1950`s material, the first a magazine advert (showing a different design of latch button):
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q113/nikbj68/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSpresto2_zps762b551c.jpg) (http://"http://s134.photobucket.com/user/nikbj68/media/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSpresto2_zps762b551c.jpg.html")
...and this one from what appears to be a catalogue, with a few dimensions in imperial and notated in metric:
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q113/nikbj68/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSpresto1_zps67c92058.jpg) (http://"http://s134.photobucket.com/user/nikbj68/media/Ceandess%20filler%20caps/CampSpresto1_zps67c92058.jpg.html")
Those dimensions read: - Presto 3"(76.2mm) Cap
- Height clearance to tank, 11/4"(31.7mm)
- Screwed extension 21/4"(57.2mm) dia x 12 t.p.i
- Length of screwed extension 1/2"(You`ll have to convert that one yourselves!!!)
- Orifice diameter 115/16"(49.2mm)
-
So that means that we have to decide which one we want? Or was the old order just for cap?

It has been brought to my attention that owners of 260 and early 289 Cobras may wish to fit just the cap and not the complete assembly, the roller pin can be removed and the new cap used as direct replacement.. The complete unit will be supplied so one has the choice of how they wish to fit replacement unit.
Sorry the price had increased from initial Guestimate. But this is due to time taken to get multiple patterns correct plus assembling additional components to make a complete unit ready to fit to your AC... Ace, Aceca, Greyhound and Cobra

Thanks Nick

Hi.
Only a few people ordered just the Cap, Nearly everyone with AC will receive a Fuel Filler Cap with correct screw threaded base as initially supplied/ fitted to their AC when it Left Thames Diton.
Gerry Hawkridge is supplying the Hawk Ace and Cobra market with the Cap fitted with straight tube, same price, not 100% correct but easier to fit.
Mike Mansergh took delivery this weekend of his new Filler Cap and has already removed old unit and fitted the new unit.
He made up a simple tool to make it a one man job without causing damage to Paintwork.
I have sent Mikes pictures to Nik Bagshaw requesting he post details on the forum, Yet another drink I O Nik...[;)]

From Mike Mansergh, via email:"Hi Keith, Fitted cap this morning, not as easy as expected. Looks great!
On a high I looked for the removal tool I made some years ago when
attempting to dismantle the one on 1073. Eventually it came to light at the bottom of my junk metal box and photos are attached. This tool made removal a one man job and removed the risk of "skewing" and damage to the paintwork. Although a piece is missing...a wooden tube to go between the tube and the cap to maintain concentricity this can easily be made up if you want to use it.
Thanks again for a job well done.
Best regards, Mike."

A very interesting point raised by Phil
Hi Keith
Two filler caps arrived in the post yesterday and they look excellent. Many thanks for all your great efforts.
I spoke to Gerry Hawkridge this morning as I find I have a bit of a problem with the Ace. It hadn’t occurred to me before, but at some point in its past someone has replaced the original filler cap with something similar in style but which has a fixed pipe for the filler hose to connect to rather than the threaded pipe that the new caps require. Gerry said he has had a number of similar conversations, that there will be one or two ways of achieving the desired result and suggested I email you. He asked me to check what outside diameter filler pipe goes into the petrol tank. I’m sure it’s still the original tank and has an input pipe with an o/d of 2.375” (virtually 60 mm). The hose connecting to it is 60 mm internal diameter.
I’m not sure why Gerry suggested I should email you, so please feel free to redirect me straight back to Gerry if you don’t feel you should get involved.
Best wishes
Phil.

CEANDESS do various base with alternative size tube or screw thread...[;)]
I have spoken to Matt Davies (MD) of Ceandess, who confirms that they have a selection of standard Base with different size screw thread and / or diameter tube.
The base could be exchanged for a more suitable base, please phone to discuss, return to Ceandess and a more suitable fitting could be fitted, PLEASE NOTE, this will involve a small handling charge (plus postage) as it is disrupptive to manufacturing line.
One or two AC owners or Hawk Ace/ Cobra owners may require this service' so I will liaise with Gerry and possibly arrange to have a couple of alternative size made available, Unfortunately it is impossible to cover all eventualities as over the past 50 plus years various caps and adaptors could well have been employed.[?].
Makes sense to contact Matt Davies or Chris Smallman at Ceandess for prompt turn round with minimum inconvenience to all concerned.[;)]
Thankfully, vast majority of Caps supplied are direct replacement for ACs with the correct fuel filler cap as originally fitted when their AC left Thames Ditton..[;)]

Good afternoon Keith
Firstly, we are very pleased with all of the positive feedback that’s being posted on the AC forum. It sounds like they were worth waiting for!
Secondly, Matt’s informed me about the filler base issue that some owner are experiencing. We are quite happy to do a swap to the alternative base for a small handling fee. We were thinking in the region of £5.00 per cap assembly. This can be reduced if we receive a batch that require altering, 10+?
A company in the USA is showing a lot of interest in purchasing a batch from us. We’ve dealt with them in the past. Having a look on their website, they have had replacement triggers CNC manufactured to replace originals due to problems with stripping and re-chroming. Apparently the originals dissolve! LINK TO WEBSITE.
I just wanted you and your customers to be aware that these CNC Triggers are unlikely to fit the new Ceandess cap. I think it’s very important to know that if one of our triggers get damaged or broken then it will need to be replaced with one of our Die Cast items. Having said that, the triggers do seem to be very strong and there is very little chance of a fracture forming during normal usage.
Maybe you could make everyone aware of this via the forum for future reference.

Both look great:
but the old cap was so strong corroded that the galvaniser gave no garantee.

So I am happy to have such a nice replacement.
Thank you Keith, a great job.

I received mine yesterday and while I thought we were receiving the complete assembly (Cap & Fill tube) I just removed the old and replaced with the new. The pins were a little stubborn, but with patience it can be done. Keith, I can't thank you enough. Just an outstanding job in organizing and follow thru. It really is a jewel. I'll post a pic after I install it. Once again just a great job.

Hi, pretty new to the ACOC. Owning a Ac Ace Bristol and I now realize that she has the wrong fuel filler cup. I think it is from an Aston Martin. Where can I purchase the original Fuel cup and whatever it needs to install it. Thais a lot in advance. Wilhelm
-
Gerry Hawkridge at Hawk Cars Ltd, his advert is in AC Action inside front cover for contact details.
-
Wilhelm, be careful of going to a Candess fuel cap - the fuel cap you have now might well be correct. The early cars used an Enots Monza fuel cap, made in brass and apparently the same as used on the 2 litre saloon. Here is one:

I have no idea when the Candess was first fitted. Perhaps all Ace Bristols had the Candess - could The Ace or Ace Bristol Registrar come up with a chassis number when the change was made? Can anyone confirm ?
-
Dear both, thank you very much for the quick answer. My fuel filler cup looks very much like the ones you took photos of. So will leave it as is. So many little things to fix. She has not been driven for the last couple of years. Means almost all seals, gaskets and bearings have to be replaced. And the sun is shining! Have a great weekend Wilhelm
-
Wilhelm
Not 100% sure when AC Cars changed the fuel filler cap from The Monza Cap to the Ceandess Lozenge shaped filler cap with the Key hole shaped release.
Looking through dozens of Ace photographs both current and period it would appear the change occurred in the 2nd quarter of 1955.. (April/May or June). Difficult to home in accurately as period photos are not always clear and current photos could depict the Ace after restoration or having had replacement cap fitted over the past 50 odd years.
Please note I have started a fresh thread reference change of components/ fittings during early production of the Ace .... Hopefully we can eventually home in on a more accurate date on many of these subtle changes...[;)]
From recent email correspondence I believe you have purchased BEX312, being a 1957 Ace it should have the Ceandess Fuel Filler Cap. Copy recently produced with a few surplus units available via Gerry Hawkridge.
Please note you must ordr unit with the correct screw threaded base and you will need to have a screw threaded adaptor collar with extention tube made in order to secure unit to rear wing and locate rubber hose to fuel tank.
I will e-mail you drawing confirming accurate dimensions, later today.
In the meantime enjoy the Ace as it is and replace the fuel filler at a convenient later date.

Hi Keith, again thank you. Recognized that you started a new thread. And yes BEX312 is parking in my garage. Would you be so kind and send me the information please. Sure there will be a next winter and that is the right time to start these little projects. Take care Wilhelm
