Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AE547 Aceca
« on: January 06, 2011, 08:26:55 »
Thanks guys that info is very useful.I bought the car from Les Payne in Australia and it is in a container on the way to me in South Africa. That is assuming the Somali pirates havn't been at work!
My knowledge on the history is limited but Les had it since 1985.At some point in its early life the AC engine expired and the Bristol b2 was fitted from a saloon together with fixed first gear and o/d. The engine was modified to D2 spec but does not have acl pump carbs.Has also been converted to discs at the front. The car has been mechanically restored and the body done but never painted for 20 years!.It is still in bare ally.Thats the way I like them so I can see no hidden terrors under the paint. The upholstery and interior is also not done.
When it arrives I will post some pics for those who might be interested
What red is Regal red? It's weird all my cars seem to end up red!!

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Rear screen trim
« on: October 12, 2013, 16:10:09 »
Hi Guys,
   I need help or advice(again!)
My rear screen rubber is without the chrome trim insert
What do I use to make one or are they available?
The rubber seems shaped to accept a concave profile about 3/8" wide

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / rear end clunk
« on: April 27, 2012, 11:05:03 »
Greg you asked me to let you know if I found my rear end "clunk"
At last I think I have
I checked from the outside to the inside> IE the hub to wheel splines -fine CV joints -fine ,drive shaft splines-fine,splines coming out of the diff -fine.Pulled the diff out and checked the CWP end float- fine.
Put the whole lot back again and it still went "clunk".Very discouraged so I parked it for a long while.
Got another rush of enthusiasm the other day and pulled the diff yet again, not a pleasant job at my age !
This time I stripped the diff and found the problem.Spider or planet gears. They work with bronze cupped thrust washers that are worn allowing a LOT of backlash. The problem  is that no spares seem to be available for ENV diffs and these cupped washers are difficult to make from phosphor bronze.
However under the internally splined out put shafts that bear on the gears is a large flat thrust washer. I am now machining new ones to space them out further to engage the gears better and get the backlash correct.
   Hopefully all will be well.
Perhaps you have a similar problem
Will keep you posted if it fixes mine

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / aceca doors
« on: November 24, 2011, 09:08:32 »
I am aware that this subject has been covered in the past but it relates to Aceca door lock mechanism. I am reliably informed that they are as were fitted to the MGA Coupe
I have tried the specialists such as Moss and Brown and Gammon with no success, perhaps someone out there could point me in the right direction of where I could further my search or perhaps they were fitted to another type of car ?
   Any suggestions !

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Diff and suspension
« on: June 13, 2011, 12:01:35 »
AE 547 is once more mobile. As told in previous posts I found the rear suspension geometry to be at some variance to optimal! 3 1/2 deg neg one side and 1 1/2 the other.
I stripped the entire back end out.Made up a new main leaf and tried to get the "eyes" 3/8" further apart .Very difficult,at the same time I increased the inner diam of the "eyes" from 3/4" to 1" thus allowing more meat in the bush. I then drilled the centre bolt hole offset to compensate for the camber error for one side. The additional meat in the new eye diam allowed me to machine eccentric bushes from Vesconite.Re assembled and Voila! 1 deg neg both sides exactly what I was wanting.Very lucky, and what a transformation to the driving.
All bushes now converted to Vesconite so no more greasing required

The clonks are a little better but on the next strip I will convert the sliding spline drive shafts to CV joints.
   Has anyone done this?
When I pulled the diff apart I saw it was a 4.3,surely a Bristol car with o.d should have a 3.9 as standard??
So does anyone have a good diff to sell me?
I have found that a number of vehicles used ENV diffs, such as Rover, Land Rover,Volvo, early Jag 120 etc, does anyone know what vehicle used a 3.9 as that would help me

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / wheel alignment
« on: April 30, 2011, 10:35:37 »
Does anyone know what the correct rear wheel camber should be on an Ace or Aceca.Mine measure 1 1/2 deg neg on one side and 3 neg on the other!!!. clearly not correct
I will need to make up a suitable length main leaf or new wishbones however I need to know the correct spec in order to calc the lengths. even a consensus measurement of existing cars would steer me in the right direction.
   Thanks

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca roof lining
« on: April 11, 2011, 17:18:25 »
AE547 has no roof lining and is of the early type with wooden formers. My question is that I can see where the lining was tacked into the wood to hold it in place but how were the unsightly nail heads obscured. Could some one possibly post a pic of one so I could see the trick

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / headlamps and interior
« on: March 21, 2011, 15:18:11 »
Once more with thanks to the ever helpful Keith, the headlamp rims for the Ace/Aceca come from a MG TF or MGA. The base measurement is 203mm,mine measured 212 and stood proud of the Aceca body. Keith's research cleared this up for me and I post this in case anyone ever needs the info, but the credit is due to him

My next problem is the interior of which I have none!
How do the doors seal to the outside?, are there any seal rubbers and where and how do the mount?
Roof lining,is this supposed to be West England Cloth? and how does it affix to the wooden pieces that criss cross the roof dome?
Any pics of the interior would be gratefully viewed so I can figure the pattern for the carpets and what edges should be bound etc
   Thanks

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca inner fender
« on: February 01, 2011, 17:14:00 »
Does an Aceca have an inner fender.Mine doesn't and any stones thrown around by the tyres impact directly on the soft ally body, not a pretty sight!. If they did have perhaps someone could post a pic so I could fabricate from GP or ally.
Nearly forgot another question. What are the wheel alignment specs and any suggestions on tyre pressures.Pirreli 185 x 16
   Thanks

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AE547 Aceca
« on: January 20, 2011, 17:10:39 »
The Aceca has evaded the Somali pirates and has successfully travelled the 450k from Cape Town to my home in George.Running at about 120kph the fuel consumption was about 11lt/100k.Not bad considering the o.d is dysfunctional.
   A few issues.
It tracks very badly in cross winds and I suspect wheel alignment.
Does a kangaroo hop(it is from Aus!!) at low throttle openings, suspect to rich on the pilot jet.I checked the carbs are balanced but the  the pilots have been soldered and drilled
Interior noise level is deafening.I am sure it will be much better when interior is in!A lot of noise seems to come from the engine compartment.Any suggestions on quietening an Aceca would be most welcome.I did have the sense to take ear plugs with me for the trip so it wasn't too bad.
A lot of banging and clattering from the back, almost as if the diff was falling out, will look in the next few days
No where to stretch out left leg (sciatica nerve problems). Will probably move the dip switch to create some space

Could someone please help with MAX ignition advance  for a 100D2. This car is fitted with a Mallory twin point system and I don't know its advance curve so I need the MAX advance setting please.

There is no bonnet stay, could some one please tell me how this was fitted, where it pivoted from etc.
How is that boot opening!!about the size of a letter box,had to get on my knees to get anything in. There has to be a better idea.
