MK IV Parts interchangeabilty
« on: August 27, 2006, 13:24:29 »
I wondered if anyone has developed a list of parts on our cars that are interchangeable with parts from other cars. I noticed that the interior light on my car is identical to the interior light on certain Land Rovers and I plan to order a new lense from the Land Rover dealer to replace my broken lense.  I only assume that AC used off the shelf parts sourced from other manufacturers in the MK IV. It wouldn't have made much sense for AC to develop its own items such as lights, switches, dashboard controls, wiper and heater motors, etc. when those from other manufacturers were already engineered and available. If such a list doesn't exist, maybe we can, with collective knowledge, get one started.  John AK1103

John,
Good idea, we really need this and will need it more in the future.  I needed a rear brake caliper with provision for the emergency brake. It ended up coming from a Peugeot wagon.  I also did get a replacement lens from Land Rover.  I am now trying to get a steering shaft bushing for where the shaft goes through the firewall.  My car is AK1121.  Mark

I agree too.  I have come across a few parts from other sources: windscreen wipers and headlights are from the Mini.  The steering column switch gear appears to be Ford Escort RS 2000.  The fuel tank cap is Jaguar.  As has been observed, it makes no sense for a small company to develop many of their own parts - Lotus do exactly the same.
